I just read this article about piracy that was very eye opening, by far the most thorough analysis of the state of PC gaming I've read.

I doubt many people will bother to read it because it is so long, but it really should be read by every person who loves PC games. Without a change in culture the future looks pretty bleak.

What is there to have a war about? He shows objective facts such as torrent rates vs. sales for a number of games and explains that this is why developers are shifting toward consoles for all but a few types of online game, backed up with numerous developer quotes.

Im quiet sure it have been proven that its not "objective"... Also there is a easy reason why devs go over to consoles... They get paid money to make games there. But hey! PC only outsell almost all 3 of the consoles together. So clearly it is dying :(

I was referring to objective facts, such as hard numbers on torrent downloads and game sales figures. Also, he covers the developers getting paid idea, have you actually read it?

yes a looong time ago... Like the other person said... Its very very very very old. And just so you know (unless it have changed) it dont include private pirate servers or the digital sales (unless they have changed it like i said). But numbers speak for them self... PC outsells almost all 3 of the consoles together. And that is with the dooms day piracy as people say.

The PC outselling the console is a completely irrelevant, not to mention obvious fact. The article is still relevant, and piracy is a HUGE deal - all you have to do is visit one of those sites and you'll see that games are being illegally downloaded by the millions. On the other hand, I haven't got any sympathy for companies who can't be bothered adapting to a changing market.

I guess I should have qualified my post since this would inevitably happen, but so what?

Also, it has been updated as recently as August, 2010, that post is from 2008.

Once you tell me the number of people of these "millions" that would buy the game, own the game, just download it to "have" (yes they never play it) then come by. Honestly i would not be shocked if it would be less sales with out piracy. *Less word of mouth *People wont be willing to buy games just to have them crash / bug / don't like it. *Even less word of mouth (but then again this can be a good or bad thing depending on if the game is good or bad) There are a few more reasons... But i cant ever agree with their way of thinking... Dev: Here you go new and shiny game! Players / gaming community: The game is broken Dev: not its not. Players: Yes it is... EA/(other big company): Why did the game sell so bad? Dev: Its the pirates i tell you! THE PIRATES!!!!!!!!!! You can even draw this story into the MMO world... except instead of it being pirates its all WoW / Blizzards fault that the game is bad. See a pattern?

Lets see...

1) There is something about it somewhere (to tired and im going to sleep now) about that...

2) The PC dont have anyone "promoting" it. Do you think Micro$oft is going to say "yeah we sadly consoles are selling less then PC" Ofc they will try to promote their console in the best possible light. On how its the next big thing and yada yada.

I couldn't quite understand your post, but you're forgetting that a lot of people just don't give a damn - they don't have any values and would pirate the game regardless of product/service quality. Piracy does help to sustain a community, but that comes naturally when it's based over an unrestricted medium such as the internet. The challenge is to create an even balance of restriction and fluidity - Steam does this just about right, I'd say.

That time of year again where the "Koroush Ghazi! anti piracy bible" gets whipped up as set in stone facts. No one knows the true facts except this, despite the apparent problems of piracy we are still getting a boat load of games on the PC and the only ones we never see are games that tradtionally bomb on the PC or are held off the PC by console specific deals.

PC only outsell almost all 3 of the consoles together. KalDurenik

Practically every mutiplat games sells better on console. Orange box is probably the only multiplat that sold better on pc in recent history.

The biggest console exclusive of the year was Halo Reach and it outsold Starcraft 2 by a mile.

The bulk of pc gaming revenue is mmo's.
