Hello

I was just thinking about what feature you would like Steam/DD outlet to have in the future ?

Mine are definietly Trade-ins or rentals. I hate the thought that once I spend 50$ on a game it's gone forever.

It's problary the only upside I see to console gaming, you would think that with digital distribution someone would have made some kind of a rental service or trade-ins. And giving the customers more option on how to get their game would decrease piracy.

I mean I had a LAN weekend once about the time when L4D2 came out and the four of us were excited about playing it. But it's insane that combined we had to spend 200$!, just to play it together.

I'm a student so I don't really have alot of money for games, i've even thought that I should maybe buy a Xbox 360 so that gaming would be cheaper, wich is sad becuase I really love my PC ):

There is a DD service greenman gaming that dows that but their library its quite small and the game trade-in value its quite small Imo i dont see the point of trade ins considering the massive sales Steam/impulse/gamersgate and D2D put I bought left4dead 2 for 7,5 euros if i were to trade-in what i would get 1-2 euros? No thanks i'd rather keep my game

Rental I could see happening, but I don't think trade-ins will ever work. Real life trade in you are actually trading in the game so they can resell it to someone else. Online there is no such thing, because everyone just downloads a copy of the game files. If Steam did trade in they would actually lose money, because normally that player would have to pay full price. Now for rental I think they haven't done it yet because people hate downloading a huge game only to be able to play it for a weekend. It's just kind of tedous. Spend a day downloading 10GB just for a few days? Kind of a waste. But it will get there eventually when everyone has blazing connections.

How would it have been any cheaper on the Xbox?

First, each game would have cost you $10 more (so you actually saved $40) and on top of that, you would have all needed to pony up $50 each for the "privilege" of playing the game online together. I really don't see how that's saving money. Even assuming that you trade in the game after you play it, at best you'll get, what, $20 for your $60 game? That's hardly a savings.

Furthermore, (and this is more specific to LFD2) Valve doesn't charge its PC customers for DLC so, if you and your friends had all wanted to play the DLC, it would have cost even more. Maybe I'm missing something but I just don't see the value.

Wait there is no offline 4 player co-op for L4D2 on consoles?

There is a mod to enable offline 4-player co-op for pc BTW Even if you needed to buy 4 L4D2 pc copies L4D2 is 14euros on steam which includes all the DLC as opposed to 360 which is still sells for $40-60 in most stores +$15 ( passing and sacrifice ) for Dlc s

Not if they get a share of the profit.

Trade-ins could be tricky on Steam, maybe do coupons do reward customers that pre-order (or buy it full price) ? Like 10$ of steam in game credit towards the next game, it would encourage more sales.

But renting could be much easier for steam to do. All the technology is there (free weekends) and once the timer is up you could either buy it or continue renting.

With the Steam sales that have now become a weekly occurance I am happy to wait for a game I want via DD to be in one of their sales, then get it for a bargain. When I've paid that little for a game I'm not too fussed about any trade in value. But I've grown up with PC gaming and not being able to trade in or sell games after use, whereas on consoles it is far more common. For me DD is only really being held back by the speed and availability of high speed broadband. For me it is still quicker to drive to the shop, buy the game and get back to install it than to download via Steam or other DD. I also still think that DD should naturally have a lower price because they have reduced costs to supply it to you - no box, disk, manual etc. you are getting physically less, so should pay less for it. DD seems to disagree with me on that!

It would be a nice and fair thing for consumers if it were possible to resell game licenses. It used to be that when you purchased a game you owned a transferable asset, now it's just a privelage to play a game.

Game companies know this and it's one of the main reasons they are pushing downloadable games attached to central accounts. This is one of the reasons that intellectual property rights are such a sham today. Companies go after pirates while abusing the crap out of the new paradigm themselves.

PC gaming offers more alternatives for buying games than any other platform.

I don't think trade ins / resell would be good for the PC industry. Great for consumers but most publishers don't seem to like retailers selling preowned copies of console games. That's why they put the one use DLCs in copies today. Renting maybe they could do that. Pay $10 and get to use the game for 2 days or something. That could probably be done in steam fairly easily since they already have free weekends. Publishers would probably get just as much money out of it and it would give consumers other options. Myself as a collector I buy games and keep them so either wouldn't be useful for me, but I don't really want the ability for games to be resold in order to keep PC gaming stronger.
