Hello, I have around 2000 dollars to spend on building a PC, what do you think is a good set up for a gaming PC. I have not been in the PC world for a long time now and I don't know what parts I should buy to get a good PC going, so please help. thanks

Hey welcome back!

Wow. You propose a good qustion.

Lets see. My rig, which is a raidmax smilodon case ( comes with 500W power supply) 2 GB OCZ Elite 5400 RAM Intel Core 2 Quad 6600, and a n msi 8600GTS (which i highly reccomend) cost about 900. I can run Doom 3 on full, as well as half life 2 and fear at near max settings

You could wait for a few more months when the AMD Phenoms and GeForce 9xxx series are released. Or you could check on the many tech sites for PC shopping lists with a budget, PCStats has a good one for starters.

May I also add that you should shop on Newegg, they have great prices and are much better than buying from a retailer. IF you have 2000 bucks to just blow on a gaming pc, i'd say build something like a better version of my rig now (like, for instance, put an 8800GTX in it and get a really good mobo) and then upgrade to one of the better nvidia 9 series. Whether or not you will want to upgrade to the phenoms or not is a bit of a gamble, as athlon hasn't said a whole lot about them and we dont know if they'll beat the core 2s or not. Also keep in mind that the new Core 2 duo/quads are coming out soon (early next year) and that they're promising 16 mb and upwards of cache for the quads, and 8 for the duos...whether or not they will be the beasts like the originals remains to be seen.

You could probably get away with that until about mid 2009ish, who knows really. The 7950s are still decent and those came out in 2006.
