i bought a gaming pc from someone i know who works in second hands electronics.

The pc only cost me £225 he did tell me it would be alright for older games but you may need to upgrade some parts for alot better preformance.

My current specs are

Processor - AMD Phenom 8400 triple core - 2.10GHz

Graphics Card - AMD Radeon HD 6450

Ram - 4gb

Just want to know some advice on what should i upgrade am i ok with the 4gb ram and the processor, and i could do with a few points towards direction on what graphics card i should get to at least play the latest games at a reasonable level.

Thanks.

ps i've got about £150/$230 i could spend

He said it was a gaming PC?

That processor was low end when it was released 6 years ago, and that graphics card is pretty much the weakest you can still buy.

It isn't worth £200 because in order to game remotely well you'd have to replace everything.

I would put a 6670 in there before a 6870. Much cheaper and don't require a upgraded power supply.

i know it's not top end or anywhere near that, but i didn't have the funds for a 600+ pc at the time so i got this, it aint that bad it runs pretty good and fast compared to some i've bought in the passed from proper shops brand new. so i thought i'd start off with it and just build it up piece by piece.

i don't mind if i need to change the power supply, i can get them cheap.

if i was to rebuild it piece by piece then if i just get that graphics card for now, what would i be best doing, should i start off with a motherboard and use what i have and then over time change it or can i not build a pc like that and i'd have to spend 100's in one go just to get it running??

You can upgrade in 'chunks' but you won't see big benefits in buying a new graphics card since the CPU is so slow, and vice versa. A new graphics card will almost certainly require a new power supply, which won't be cheap like you said. Cheap power supplies break and can break other parts too. To replace the CPU you will have to replace motherboard and ram with it too. The point is, you will just end up with a new computer, making buying that one completely pointless and a waste of money.

It'll be good if you start by maxing out the RAM on that old PC. Depending on the age, you might be able to get 8GB into it. Upgrading the graphics card might be a good idea as well, but don't go crazy, as after that the CPU will be your bottleneck, and I never see a point in upgrading them without upgrading the motherboard as well. At that point, you might as well be building a whole new gaming PC.

What about a 6670? Maybe just to see how well it fairs? I have one in my media PC, which only has a Pentium e5300, and it does ok. Medium settings on a lot of games. Heck, it was able to max out Velvet Assassin! Lol

thanks i'll get a new graphics card. the pc plays games ok with what i have sim city is playing nicely on medium settings i know it's not a graphicly power house but still and it plays need for speed most wanted on low settings so i think just a step up in a graphics card will be alright for now, i'm not one for first person shooters anyway, and then over the next year i'll piece together a new build, i only got the pc because my old one broke and i needed a new one and for 200 with a hd screen and keyboard and mouse i couldn't really argue when monies tight.

i'm going to buy a brand new pc bit by bit, so any suggestions on what motherboard to get which is going to last a few years under £200, or do i really need to pay more???

Just checked my power supply and it's 500watts does that make a difference to what card i can get???

Brand is more important than wattage when it comes to power supplies. Even if you're upgrading in chunks, you'd have to get a new CPU, motherboard and RAM in one go.
