Try looking in the Device Manager to see if your audio device is listed. It may have a little exclamation point next to it which means Windows knows it's there but can't use it without the proper drivers.

Are you using a sound card or integrated audio? If a sound card what is the make and model? If integrated sound what motherboard do you have? Are your speakers on? Is the volume muted? If you want to start over from scratch uninstall any audio device drivers from Add/Remove Programs and then right-click on the audio device itself in the Device Manager and click Uninstall. Then reboot the machine and see if the Windows Hardware Wizard pops up asking for drivers.
