i had a similar problem with my computer too, but that was after i completely crashed it and started from new, and as well i had a windows xp. but heres what was wrong with mine:the problem with mine was i didnt have an audio device, so i downloaded "Realtek AC97 Audio" i just typed that in on google downloaded, ran it restarted my computer and it worked try that. i hope it helps
Try looking in the Device Manager to see if your audio device is listed. It may have a little exclamation point next to it which means Windows knows it's there but can't use it without the proper drivers.
Are you using a sound card or integrated audio? If a sound card what is the make and model? If integrated sound what motherboard do you have? Are your speakers on? Is the volume muted? If you want to start over from scratch uninstall any audio device drivers from Add/Remove Programs and then right-click on the audio device itself in the Device Manager and click Uninstall. Then reboot the machine and see if the Windows Hardware Wizard pops up asking for drivers.
