If it switches off altogether I'd look into your cpu temperatures, could be something like your heatsink isn't mounted correctly. Could also be the psu but 550w sounds plenty..BLKR4330
Seconded. Check your CPU temps. It sounds like your motherboard is shutting your machine off because your CPU is overheating.
It's easy to mount stock Intel coolers improperly. If you don't push the pins in with enough force, you could be looking at some serious CPU cooling issues.
yeah i think it could be the cpu fan cause i dont think i clipped all the pins in because i was pushing down hard and because im new at this i dont know how much pressure the motherboard can take before breaking so i left one not pushed in so i will check that out and hopefully thats it
Actually, it doesn't really sound like an overheating issue... not with the CPU or vid cards at least...
Usually when the CPU overheats the mobo throttles it down and starts beeping (on most mobos, unless you turned off thermal throttling). Either that, or the computer freezes up or blue screens rather than shutting off.
When a vid card overheats it usually artifacts or crashes, in which case your video either freezes for extended periods of time or you get booted to the windows desktop with a message that your video drivers have stopped working.
It sounds like a PSU problem to me.
ok i used the program to check my temp and there were 2 gpu temperatures and another (cant emember what it was) but when i was doing nothing they were at 43 C / 35 C/ 32 C....then when i played Medieval 2 total war at 1680X1020 full graphics i paused it during a big fight and it said 48 C/ 40 C/ 35 C..........then about the same with oblivion full graphics.......does that sound right becasue i would have thought it would have been hotter even if it wasnt overheating........or am i just using the program wrong?tooheys_n00b
Those temps sound like they're within normal operating range.
Then, as others have said, it's likely a PSU issue. Besides that, the only other culprit would probably be a faulty motherboard.
