A friend of mine and I have been trying for years to find a turn-based strategy game that we can play via e-mail. He has a Mac, and I'm running a PC. Any suggestions? Will the e-mail files exchange between the Mac and PC versions of Civ 4? Thanks!

I am pretty sure that people have done this with the Total War series. Campaign mode.

That would be great - I think Rome Total War is the best strategy game I've ever played. Is there a Mac version, or would he have to run it in bootcamp or some such thing? Thanks!

Bootcamp will work, assuming he can run the game. As for how to do it. I dont recall. I found it in a modding forum. 8 guys where sending the file to each other. It took them weeks to get past the first couple turns.

There is no Mac version of any of the Total War series yet, though Rome: Total War is currently being ported as a classic title. If he's using BootCamp, then there's no need for the PC vs Mac question, since he can't run any PC game. The Mac and PC versions of Civilization IV are compatible in network multiplayer, so they should be compatible with PBEM as well.

Thank you both for the info. Civ 4 looks like a good bet, then. But what is the "port" a Mac thing? (Forgive my ignorance! :) )

In this case, it means taking the PC version and converting it to run properly in Mac OS X. This means some parts of the game need to be rewritten.

Ask your friend to use bootcamp (partitions your drive and lets you install a different OS) if the game is only available on windows or he can cider it though not very recommendable due to bugs and performance hit.
