Here are the specs of my desktop PC:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ CPU
ABIT KN8 Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Motherboard
4 x 512MB DDR400 RAM (Corsair Valueselect)
NVIDIA 7900GT 256MB
160GB Western Digital HDD
Antec SONATA II Computer Case w/ 450Watt SmartPower 2.0 PSU

I am having a bizarre problem. I built this PC over a year ago, but in the last month or so I have had trouble turning on the system. If I shut down my PC and attempt to turn it on by pressing the power button on my case, one of two things will happen:

1) Nothing -- no lights, no response, nothing.
2) The green power LED will flash when I press the power button, but the system won't start. If I hold the power button, the power LED will flash intermittently for as long as I hold the button, but the system won't start.

However, after pushing and holding the power button many times I can usually get the PC to power on (hence how I am able to type from it now). So the system DOES work, it's just a pain in the ass to try and get my PC to boot -- and sometimes it won't power on at all. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Try booting up with all your hard drive and cd/dvd roms power connections unplugged and video card power connection unplugged. Could be your power supply has a hard time supplying the juice to start it up.

Thanks for the replies.  I figured it might have something to do with my PSU, but if that's the case, why haven't I always had this problem?  And why would my computer be able to start sometimes, but not others?

PSUs degrade over time. Initially it may have been enough to power everything but as time goes by they become weaker, also if you added anything it could have been pushing it too far and now its feeling the effects of it. 7900GT likes 28 amps on the 12v, if you have a cheap 450w psu it may not meet that.

Does it crash or spontaneously reboot after its running? If so then i would look at the psu like the others have said.

If not it could be as simple as a loose wire runnning from the power on lead of the motherboard to the front panel switch, which would explain it working when you furiously try to repeatedly turn it on.

Open the case and trace the lead from the power switch back to the motherboard and make sure it isnt loose. Also check the connection on the power switch itself for any faults, loosness etc etc.

If you have a voltage multi meter you can check your rails by testing the supplied voltage on an empty 4 pin molex connector with the system powered on.

Its more than likely not anything else though such as ram, drives or addin cards. A problem with these unless it was directly and physicly shorting the voltage would not keep the system from powering on. It would simply keep it from making a successfull post screen and thus keep you from completely booting up.

Conclusion : Its the power supply or the power on/off switch wiring. Or possibly the circuit on the motherboard controlling the power on/off function.
