And on the back of the power supply a red light is turned on and when I try to turn it on it makes a little zap type electrical noise, I'm going to guess it's broken, any help would be awesome, thanks.

***As far as I know there is no light on, on the motherboard that I could see***

Could be a couple of things: 1) Bad PSU 2) Bad motherboard

I'm really really hoping that it is a bad PSU.

its possible that it could also be a short. take everything out (a pain i know), give the case a scrub down to make sure theres no debris. check all the motherboard mounts to make sure there OK, check your mobo to make sue theres nothing sticking to the back of it or anything and then reinstall everything. try and boot with the minimum required hardware just to see if itll then behave and then add the extra hardware. i dont have my hopes up for that...i think neatfeatguy is right. but its worth giving it a go just to make sure its not something that can be fixed for nothing.

Sounds like a short.
