PCI Express 2.0 x16

I am interested in buying a new video card. However, I am confused on the compatibility between PCI-E 2.0 x16 and PCI-E x16. What I would like to know is if you can take a PCI-E 2.0 x16 video card and plug it into a PCI-E x16 slot on a motherboard? I assume if it would work, you would lose some performance from the card?

A PCI-E 2.0 card is backwards compatible with PCI-E x16 slots, and don't worry about performance because it going to be a while before games take advantage of PCI-E 2.0.michael098

I would wager that they never will. Similar to how agp 8x was never used before it became obsolete and was taken over by pci-e

Im buying a new mother board witha PCIe 2.0 slot but i have a PCIe x16 video card. My question to you guys is would my video card work with that motherboard?
