Well I thought I'd give it a try since people here on GS talks about it, I had it avaliable in my humble indie bundle anyways but oh god it's really scary. I thought Dead Space was scary but Penumbra just manages to create an atmosphere that makes me feel paronoid and nervous and I haven't really played it alot yet, the combat is abit gimmicky I heard it's removed in Black Plague which should be even scarier, looking forward to it.

What do you people think of the penumbra series?

Best horror games on the market. I've never played a game that genuinely scared me, then Penumbra came along.

Great game, loved the Overture and Black Plague. I couldn't finish Requiem however. Just too much puzzle gameplay for my liking. Black Plague did it right though with a good balance of combat and puzzles.

I thought the game was very scary in a few key moments in the game. The combat in the game ruins the whole point of the game its trying to make. The only enemys you face are those annoying spiders and dogs. You can just swat them away thoe making the whole point of sneaking...entirly pointless.

It's the only scary game this generation. To this day, I have no idea how people are scared of Dead Space, RE5, and that laughable attempt at horror, F.E.A.R.. Penumbra has it. I like how the combat was removed in Black Plague. That one as a whole was a lot scarier than Overture. Near the end of Overture, though, it gets really, really damn unpleasant.

this ^ f.e.a.r. is not scary at all few predictable jump moments nothing more and re5 is not a horror game at all imo :D

Scariest game series ever. For once is a nice change when a game gives you the feeling of been helpless and your only chance of surviving is using the environment. That adds alot to the horror element Also when you finished play Penumbra black plague. Thats even scarier if thats possible

Yea, I agree with Jango, Overture wasn't to scary for me simply because...you mainly only face 2 enemies both of which can be swatted to death with INCREDIBLE ease. Havent played Black Plague yet but that one looks like it could get to me, when I played the demo so long ago it was pretty scary.

I'm only at the start of the game and i don't haev any weapons so creeping around in the dark caves is even scarier when you don't have a gun to defend yourself.

I really like the Penumbra series though towards the end of Black Plague I guess I was a little disappointed. Also I think Penumbra Requiem is pretty bad. I'm not a big fan of puzzle games and it feels like a portal rip off.

I found Black plague to be the scarier of the two but I found Overture to be the better game overall. At first in overture I did not think it was actually possible to kill the enemies. I thought you could just knock them down but they would always get back up. Though when I realised this was not the case, it really took the fear element out of the game. Still it did get really disturbing towards the end and it had some crazy moments that really kept me hooked. I love scary games and those jump out of your chair moments but those really creepy parts that make you think "WTF" afterwards are what keeps me interested.

I also think Overture has the better environments.

This game better be worth it. I been hearing nothing but high praise for the past year or so. It isn't talked about much but everyone gushes over it. I just bought the 3 game pack on steam. I just want a new experience and this game looks to deliver that.

I completely agree. I bought all 3 after I heard about it in a recommendation thread and looked the game up. I'm about halfway through the first, and it is fantastic. It makes you feel alone, but like you're being watched. It makes me jump a lot. It's challenging and fun to figure out. Although, as I see others are talking about, I won't miss the combat when I play Black Plague. It's horrible. If I don't crouch the dogs always kill me.

I was just going to ask about the graphics. They do not impress but I'm guessing the story and gameplay are the highlights of Penumbra Overture? Interesting, I might get into this series.

I think what makes it so scary aside from sound and visuals is the feeling of vulnerability. Unlike Dead Space and RE5 where you have an arsenal of weapons to defend yourself. Penumbra makes it feel real

It's very creepy, it's the only game that's given me chills along with Silent Hill 1 and one Thief DS level.

The game is amazing but I'm a lil disappointed with the scaryness. The very beginning was incredibly scary because you had no clue what was going on and some of the sounds that happened when you're in that first room through the walls were terrifying. Now I've just gotten inside the library and I've only yelled out once...last night at about 4am "Oh S***!!" an infected broke through a door behind me while I rifled through a desk. Good stuff overall.

Does the game ramp up the scary soon here?

Playing black plague by the way. I heard the first wasn't as scary and only had dogs and spiders so I skipped that for now.

Just finished the game. Amazing game, great unique experience but Alan Wake def scared me more or left me a little more uneasy while playing. This game had so few enemies that when they came it shocked you but it still could've done with twice as many.Tense psychological horror is cool but there were parts of Alan Wake where I felt like I was gonna have a heart attack as I ran out of ammo and sprinted for that light while 3 goons much faster than myself gave chase and whipped pick axes at me.

And the no combat is cool but there should be some way to defend, even if it doesnt kill or hurt them. Like if you could swing a plank to back them up for breathing room. Even if it did no damage just to be able to knock them down, then the game could do more enemies. Or if they included guns, let there be VERY scarce ammo. Like say only 20-30 rounds for the whole game and then up the number of enemies this way you can't just mow them down and have to rely on running or hiding most of the time.
