Vista's fine--go for it. If your PC's OK for gaming in the first place, then gaming with Vista won't hurt at all.
Vista's gotten a lot better (to me) just two weeks ago, when MS released their "Performance and Compatibility" patches. Before that, my PC would give me the BSoD about twice a week, and it always happened when I was trying to access a network (such as print off a shared printer or play a movie off the server). I always thought that my mobo's NIC wasn't fully compatible with Vista. After installing the performance and stability updates, though, I stopped getting those BSoDs and various other error messages.
So, if you get Vista, you'll want to download these Performance and Compatibilityupdates off the MS website (it doesn't come through automatic updates because validation is required).
