I put some money into my aging computer. A new video card, and some more ram. I noticed no increase when upgrading from 512mb to 2.5gb. And I bought a new video card 7800, yeah I know not the greatest, and I still get lag. I've only tryed it on BF2, and BF2142

Do you have the latest drivers for your video card?  What settings and resolution are you tying to play at?  Realistically there should be no issues at all running BF2 on max settings with a 7800 but im still curious.

I have it at 1152x864, all settins maxed, tryed it at 4xAA, and 0xAA. Still lagged hard in both. VD Scale at 100%. Do I have to have my normal monitor setting at that to? or noo?

 and yeah, up-to-date drivers.

Hard drive? Reinstall BF, but defrag your drive first. What type of drive do you have, IDE or sATA? Running out of space? Older drive? Motherboard might be holding you back a little too? Did you reinstall your graphics drivers? Best to uninstall the drivers and then reinstall from scratch.

You know, it might be time for an OS re-install? When was the last time you did that? Couldn't hurt to try before spending more money.

well you should be able to play games at good fps rate with that rig. Im baffled my 7900gs and 1gb of ram is able to run that game just fine. And as for my processor it is an attrocious AMD athlon 64 3200. I have bf2142 maxed and get no lag what so ever, I am confused casue i dont even have the reccommended amount of ram and you have more. try rolling the drivers back. What is your bandwidth? and do you have any 3dmark scores cause you shouldnt be lagging. I fail to see how re-formatting the HDD will have an effect, let alone re-installing your OS.

Re-installed drivers 3 times. I'll post my 3d marks score after I'm all done.

Did you install your motherboard's AGP driver?

I had problems with BF2, a bunch of slowdown and stuttering. But once I installed the GART driver on my nForce3 board, it became smooth as a whistle.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've installed any drivers for my mobo.

So when I go to SiS.com and go through the step by step  do I go Win  Xp-> AGP(GART) Driver -> AGP(GART) Driver ?

Which Socket is your P4 775 or 478, with 478 you just wasted i don't know how much due to the fact that it bottlenecks alot! 775 doesn't on the other hand. Another thing you can try is to update BIOS, or to "reinstall" it (Clearing CMOS and then adjusting the settings). Worse case scenario, try to reformat so Windows will have a fresh installation of drivers and what not...

I'm looking into what socket it is, My BIOS date is 06/28/04, so I'm guessing that needs a update.

Yes, that probably would work. But just to be safe, I would go to your motherboard's website, and download the AGP driver from there.

Lag is pretty subjective. What kind of FPS readings are you getting? Any stuttering of any sort too?

Well, it takes me about 2 and a half minutes to load a game. And when I get in I get uber-stuttering.

Considering everything else, the problem might not be so much your computer, but the Battlefield games themselves.

I know a couple of friends on X2 3800+'s that have heavy stuttering issues with the game, to the point where it is unplayable. Everything else runs perfectly fine for them, though.

Try some other games and see if you have similar results.

Thinking your american, i believe you can get a cheap mobo which has a socket 775, try to find one with c2d support if you want, if not then a pentium d will suffice. Battlefield 2 was a hog on system too so i just uninstalled it, annoying stutterings.... Gotta love unoptimized games! I was also think are you SURE all of the RAMS are the same type, meaning if your dual channelling them, make sure they are the same company and same model, same speed with the same timings, if one of them isnt equal to the others, meaning its lower than the rest, all of the others will automatically downclock to the slowest one!

if nothing is working try Battlefield 2 tweaking from www.tweakguides.com oh if that doesnt work either... try a reformat... maybe there are still traces of your old hardware in the registry... happens sometimes! BUT AS LAST RESORT!

My mobo is an old Intel Desktop Board D865PERL. For my ram, I had some pc "nerds" order all my stuff so I didn't order a wrong part. Unless my 2 256 ram sticks are slowing down the 2 1gb sticks
