So Im working on a home theater room, and started looking for the most important part, the TV. I stopped in Best Buy last night because I had some time to kill and asked the guy there where the DLP TV's were, and he said they only had a few floor models left because the big companies were phasing them out. Now I already have a 50" sammy DLP in my living room, and i like it. I dont get the rainbow effects or the blobs, and I haven't noticed the viewing angle to ever be a problem.

I was hoping to go DLP because I think the picture is good, and you can get a 70+" DLp for the price of a 55" LCD/PLasma.

Can anyone confirm DLPs are being phased out, or was the guy just trying to sell me a more expensive TV?

If they are being phased out, how nice of a plasma or LCD can i get for $2500.

Not sure they are completely getting phased out, but as cost goes down on the LCD and Plasma's it's definitely going to be harder to find DLP's.

I'm in a similar boat.  I just recently finished a room in our basement that's going to be my theater room.  I was thinking of getting a 70ish inch TV and DLP is obviously the way to go at that size.  However, Misubishi and Samsung seem to be the only ones here locally that are sold.  And sadly, the Misubishi's aren't very good.

I'm going to say you were flat out lied to. Doesn't suprise me, it was Best Buy after all. They are phasing out plasma's not dlp's, as far as I know. Most major companies have already stopped manufacturing plasmas altogether, including Toshiba, Phillips, and either Panasonic or Pioneer. I cant remember which, if not both.

You could always buy online and have it delivered.

But at 70"+ wouldn't it be better to go projection? Your home theater is in the basement so light should not be an issue.

You should not be surprised that he was trying to sell you a more expensive TV, even if they were phased out you should be able to find bulb replacements down the road, or just get the LED models that don't need that. At our local Fry's they already pushed the DLPs to the corner of the showroom in time for the holiday shopping season

I may just have to order one online, I didnt want to do that, but it might be my only option.

i thought about getting a projector, but the room would always have to be dark, and i plan on using the room for other things too, like having buddy's over and watching a Cavs game and playing some cards.

If your a Cavs fan then my opinion of you just went up. You dont need to buy a DLP online, try Circuit City. Thats actually where I bought mine.

You can try price matching them at a local circuit city, usually online stores are cheaper but if the DLP has an issue you're better off returning it to the store. Go to AVSforum and see the sort of quirks that can come with a DLP.
Phillips and Toshibafreesafety13
Panasonic and Pioneer are the better companies though ;) Where did you hear they were stopping plasma production?

I already posted 2 links for 2 of the companies, how about you read before posting. As far as Pioneer and Panasonic, I cant find anything concrete, just rumors, so I'm not going to bother linking to sites that dont provide concrete evidence. EDIT It appears that those links dont work, this has been happening to me if I try to link using a new addon for firefox 3 that adds the html code for me so I dont have to type it. I thought it would be a nice time saver, but it doesnt work. So, try these in bbcode Philips, Pioneer, Fujitsu, and Toshiba

Maybe I would of read the link if you were capable of linking...

Anyway, from your edit, seems all of theses are old link from 2004 and 2007. Most of theses compagnies already stoped producing Plasma, but the biger compagnie are still making. As for DLP, here is a link straight from your sources saying Sony has stoped DLP http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/12/31/sony_renounces_rpt/ .

You cant get much bigger than Philips, Pioneer, and Toshiba. It doesnt suprise me that Sony would stop producing DLP's. Their DLP's werent very good to begin with.

Well it won't be long before the onlything being manufactured is OLED or LED tvs, I bet they are phasing out DLPs becase Plasmas are getting to be the same price and LCDs are catching up, and 99% of people would rather have a flat panel with worse video quality that a huge DLP that provides a little better quality.

As I said earlier, I didnt want to link to a Pioneer article describing how they were going to phase out plasma production. But, since my previous links didnt work, I decided to link to a article that at least gives something about Pioneer phasing out plasma. I wish I could find more info, but its just not out there, or I dont know the right places to look.

Sony never produced a DLP.  They did produce LCOS displays which were very highly regarded.

Pioneer is not phasing out plasmas. They will stop making their own panels. They will be getting their panels from Panasonic.

Mitsu just came out with the thinner Laservue RPTVs and Sammy is still making DLPs. Pioneer just came out with their next generation Kuro plasmas, same with Panasonic. .

Sony SXRD were the best Rear Projection TVs before they stopped making them :| They stopped because they weren't making money, everyone wanted flat panel LCDs so they're moving forward with that and OLED.

Anything above 50'' in plasma is way more expensive than DLP.

I've found plenty of DLPs online, best buy, circuit city, and hhgregg all have them online, but not so many in the stores. I was impressed by the sheer size of Mitsu's behemoth 73" DLP at $2,179.

Mitsubishi

But the piture just isnt as good as a 50" plasma for $1,800.

Panasonic

but then again, its so hard to tell what the picture will really look like what they have the settings all set to highest output in the stores and the TVs aren't calibrated properly.

and yes I'm a cavs fan :) Im from north east Ohio.

Uhhh, those are front projectors.  I think most people are talkin' about rear projectors which are in fact being phased out as Flat panel prices fall.  It's still the best bang for your buck in terms of cost per inch. I still don't like rear pros though.  The viewing angles are a real deal breaker for me.
