ok so im looking for a new mobo for a build. i know my build right now is ok for now. but this build is for my dad.

one thing is i found on newegg. this CPU

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103644

Phenmon II x4 940 OEM for $95

but the this Phenmon is a AM2+ Socket. the mobo im looking at is this MSI mobo

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130290

the board supports AM3 socket but it says the CPU types are Phenom II / Athlon II / Sempron 100 Series.

so can this mobo support the Phenmon II x4 940 AM2?

Yep, you wont see a big enough difference going to Phenom 2 from your Athlon 2 which are just cut down Phenom 2's. AM3 cpu in a AM2+ motherboard=Yes , AM2+ cpu in AM3 motherboard=No

ok this is now a second question i have this mobo i just notice it has 2 PCI-e X16 slots. one if x16 and the other is x4. so if i ever want to SLI 2 cards t hat means ill have to get 2 ATI cards then right? beause its running under Cross fire is so that sucks but i guess i could get 2 HD6850s down the road right? or i can buy a AMD SLI mobo

becuase i have 2 GTX 460 is there a way to get 2nd GTX 460 and hook both up?

also if i do SLI GTX 460 i got the Gigabyte one wit doubles fans. does that mean i will have to get the same type card, get a 2ng Gigabyte GTX 460 double? or i can get any GTX 460?

If thats the case you should get a Phenom 2 X4 925 over that 810

6850 is slower then your GTX 460 so why even bothering getting one or even two 6850's because when the time comes for you to *need* to upgrade your gpu there will be another $200 gpu 2-3x faster.

*EDIT*

YourM4A77D motherboard does not have two pci-e slots able to handle two gpu's.

yeah thats what i was thinking. ill scratch the double GPU idea. lol i just notice ill have to get a bigger PSU.

ill get a mobo thats chaper in that aspect. plus my GTX 460 right now on 1920x1080 is handling ass the games very well.

whats a good mobo you sudgest for under $70 is possiable in ATX form. not Mico ATX

There seems to be a bit of misinformation in here.

There are AM3 motherboards that support AM2+, I have one.

My current processor is the PII x4 940 BE too.

You'll be forced to use DDR2, as AM2+ processors don't support DDR3, but there really aren't any noticeable advantages to DDR3 over DDR2 so it's not a big deal.

Thats an AM3/AM2+ mobo, not an exclusively AM3 mobo like the one the TC was asking about.

Why don't you go all out and buy a Gigabyte 890FX-UD5 which has 2 x16 Crossifre slots and a 965? Then you can CrossFire 2 6870's.

Ahh. I though people were speaking generally, not specifically. My mistake.

Yep, due to the memory controller if I am not mistaken right? Like am3 need to support ddr3 (and ddr2), and am2+ can only support ddr2.
