Both CPU are almost the same price £10 difference between then, 550 being cheaper. But I wanted to know which one would perform better in general tasks and which one would last longer in terms of performence in the next 2-3 years?

I know that 9650 are the original phenoms that were not good but still 2 cores difference for £10..

Man AMD is on the roll lately

The Phenom II x2 will walk all over the Phenom x4 in programs that only utilize 1 or 2 cores. Most games and programs out there only make use of 1 or 2 cores...things are slowly making the change over to 2 or more cores, but it's still a work in progress. Without actually have a benchmark comparing the two, you might even have similar performances out of a program that makes use of 3-4 cores when using the Phenom II x2 vs the Phenom x4. The x2 550 gives the E8400 a run for it's money - it pulls ahead in some benchmarks and loses in others and runs the same in some others. They handle games pretty much on the same level, some games are better on the Phenom II and others on the E8400. Why not look in the Phenom II x3 720 or the x4 810?

The Phenom II would be better in almost anything, it would destroy the 9650 in games and also would likely have more overclocking room if its like the x4's which i'm assuming it is, I didnt even know they were out yet though:P.

They're out and affordable, too... I've been considering upgrading to one myself. Currently on a 939 3000+. Although, I'm still undecided....

Read a few reviews on the thing most say that they were able to OC it to around 3.9..

This reviewer got it to OC to 4.0, though: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/981/1/

not really a fair review for benchmarks. Note that the quad cores are running DDR2, while the duel is DDR3, but still worth a read, I guess. http://www.techspot.com/review/171-amd-phenomx2-athlonx2/

As for DDR2 compared to DDR3 - I wish I could find the test results - the DDR3 isn't really anymore effective at the lower speeds when compared to some good speed DDR2. You need some good, high speed DDR3 before you really start to break away from the threshold that DDR2 sets. Yes, DDR3 is faster, but the actual results are minimal over DDR2 until you get good fast DDR3.

Oh, then I guess the second review is fair then. Regardless, looks to be a good bargin CPU option. Will allow you to put that extra 100-180 bucks into the GPU or games, anyway.

The X2 550 will tear it to shreds. Oh, and if you're worried about # of cores....
