Just use the cheat.  Type the ~ key them click on the door or chest you want to unlock and type "unlock".  I hate that mini-game too and always use the cheat.

I believe the spells are under the alteration discipline and there is a quest where you can get an unbreakable lock pick. And for a tip you can auto attempt the lock without picking each tumbler manually.

Go to the noturnal shrine (near leyawiin to the north east) and do that mission, you get an ubreakable lockpick, any lock from then on is easy as pie :D

Thieves guild missions suck anyway.

Actually, once you learn how to do it, it's not the hard at all - and kinda fun. I was very frustrated at first until i googled for help. The key thing I was missing was what to listen and look for - plus I was locking the springs into position with a mouse click. Felt pretty stupid once I learn this, but I didn't have a guide for the game.  Basically, there's a different higher pitched sound when you push the pegs (or whatever up) listen for that sound and click the left mouse button, which will make it stay in place.

There's better instruction and video for lockpicking if you google it.

Simple solution. When you pick one of the bolts it will go up fast meaning do not press. When the bolt goes up slow and smooth you'll realize you can now click on it, but hurry up or you will break a lockpick.

This brings up a question: Why is there an unbreakable lockpick..it should just be a easy lockpick to open any lock..it's the same thing you get the same result and it's just quicker.

Good advice.

As for general lockpicking, you just gotta get the feel for it.  Some people claim that if you listen it helps, but what I do is just memorize the timing.  Every time you lift a pin, it will either stay in place for a split second, or it will fall in place.  Keep doing it until you find the "starting point", or the place where it stays for a split second.  Then just count how many times after that the pin keeps falling.  Do this for a few cycles, and just count upwards, with number 1 being the part where it stays in place and 2 through whatever being the places where it falls in place.  For example, if you have three spots where it falls down immediately, just count 1,2,3,4 over a few times and right after 4, when you are about to restart the cycle on 1 (remember, 1 is the count where the pin stays for a second) just click it when you start the cycle over. 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 1 click

Agreed. Once you get that skeleton key every lock opens no prob and you won't feel like you're cheating.

What's the difference between getting unbreakable picks and just using the cheat?  Both make that dumb mini-game pointless and the cheat is faster.

You work for the unbreakable pick and still need to actualy pick the lock, whereas with the cheat you just type something.

There is also a mod that allows you to buy picks from a market vendor.

I find the easiest way is to just listen to the tumblers, you can actually do it with your eyes closed this way lol

Working for the picks might mean something but picking the lock with unbreakable locks is pointless.  You are going to get it open no matter what with an unbreakable pick so it just means it's a waste of time.  Plus the way the game is designed by how time is frozen as you pick the lock its not like the time it takes to pick the lock means anything.  It's not like your chances of being caught are increased by the time it takes to pick the lock because time is frozen.  So once you get the unbreakable picks you might as well just use the cheat.  Unless you enjoy that dumb little mini-game that you know you will win every single time over and over and over.

I have a friendly disagreement. The pitfall with resorting to console commands, unless absolutely necessary, is it can easily turn into a slippery slope of where do you draw the line between playing the game how the designers intended versus cheating? It's easy to use the console and type in the command for all the gold, the best armor, etc. What if your only need 500gold to get the last piece of furtiture for the Bruma house? Where do you draw the line? Moreoever anyone who has typed in some "god mode" cheat in a game knows the fun lasts about 5 minutes, because there's no challenge.

The skeleton key is a legitimate item in the game, and it took time and effort to go south and complete the quest for it. Yes it's easy to open locks with it, but it's working within the game, and my character earned it. I understand your saying using the console isn't much different practically, but the difference is I'm not typing console commands to open locks, and I suspect if one has drawn the line like that already, they are less likely to use the console when confronted with another challenge. That's really my point; games are better without cheating, and it's better to draw a definate line and not use the console unless there is a game bug/glitch.

I just hit the auto button. I havent found there to be any difference in success or failures between manual picking and automatic.

Actually, the skeleton key is faster in many instances. And I agree with Deltaforce-, one thing can lead to another. It's just better not to cheat at all. Plus, you can't do the Hermaeus Mora quest without finishing the Nocturnal quest and getting the skeleton key anyway.

You guys are strange.  You act like game cheats are a drug...  Who cares if you cheat of not?  If you worry about if people use game cheats or not you really need to get out more!  And I use the lock cheat and do not use the gold cheat.  But if I ever do decide to use other cheats who the H cares?!?!  Its a freaking game!!

Like someone said before, its a personal belief, but my opinion is that cheats ruin games because it takes all challenge away from them.  While a cheat to unlock doors isnt god mode or unlimited ammo, it still ruins the immersion factor of the game.  If you cant pick the lock, then that is a challenge to you.  It is something off limits, forbidden even, until you have picked easier locks and increased your skill.

I agree basersx. I don't use the console, but seriously, it's a single player game. Nothing he does will affect your gameplay at all. So why do you care if he uses cheats?

"Oh man, some guy I don't know is using cheats in his Oblivion game! What is the world coming to?"

No. You guys need to not freakout at somebody for playing the game differently than you.

MMO cheats are a completely different story, though.Â
