Hi, I'm looking to build a future proof gaming pc on a budget and after picking out a few parts I realised I don't have a clue about motherboards :P I'm aiming to have these parts:

AMD FX6300
8GB/12GB RAM
660 < GB 660ti < 7950 < 680 < 760 frozr < 670 4gb < 770 < 7970
1TB/2TB HDD 7200rpm
550W/600W PSU 80+ Bronze rating

As you can see I'm still a bit up in the air about gpus, it is mainly based on my remaining budget after buying the rest of the stuff. If anyone could suggest a good motherboard with 3 RAM slots and the capability of SLI/Crossfire (I'm hoping to tack on a cheaper gpu down the line) I'm guessing I'll need a better mobo for the better gpus?

Also, not sure how relevant it is but I plan to have a few fans, possibly a water cooler, a fan controller and a disc drive

Hope I made it clear enough! Many thanks in advance

You should post this on the PC hardware board.

That CPU is not very good for gaming. I know you are on a tight budget, but spend 40-50 dollars more on a sandy/ivy/haswell processor. That AMD cpu is a waste of money. Secondly, a 660 ti or 7950 is perfect for a budget gamer. Anything less and you will be switching parts in a year or two.

When looking at a motherboard, it basically comes down to two questions:

1. Will you overclock?

2. Are you doing crossfire/sli?

If you answered no to both, then you can get a nice board for 90-100 dollars. If you do want to overclock, expect to spend $120+ on a quality board.

Thanks, I've done that now :)

I was planning on getting an Intel CPU but it's cheaper to buy an AMD 6 core rather than an Intel 4 core :/ I don't plan on overclocking anything and yes, I would like the option to be able to add another GPU in a few years :)

P.S. I've posted this on the specs forum so this can be closed if you'd sooner reply there :) http://uk.gamespot.com/forums/topic/29448316/picking-the-right-motherboard?msg_id=341515168#341515168

AMD cpu's are just fine for gaming, and you cannot beat the price. Just the FX series is not meant for gaming and has a very poor rating even next to their 4x cpus. My Phenom X4 965 has lasted me forever and I feel no need to upgrade it anytime soon. Anyone who tells you that you cannot get a good AMD gaming cpu is ignorant or an intel fanboy.

No game in existence uses the extra cores, it is a waste, and there are 4 core cpu's that perform better and cost around the same. Not saying it will not work for gaming, but you can get better for the money.

the fx-6300 is also more than adequate for gaming. tehy basically peform around where my cpu sits (assuming no overclocking on them and overclocking on mine). and when you overclock them they match SB cpu's rather evenly

Crysis 3 uses more than 4 cores

so does sniper: ghost warrior 2 and bf3. and let us not forget when star citizen finally gets an actual game portion to it. that game currently is specced at utilizing 6 core maybe even more
