Hey I recently bought the Pioneer HTP071 surround sound 5.1 unit. I have put it all together and plugged my tv, bluray, freeview box, and xbox up with HDMI ports. I have enabled ARC and am still having issues with the rear surround sound L and R speakers and the centre, in that i'm not getting any sound from them. I have followed the instructions to the letter and am frankly out of ideas. I was hoping that someone could advise me on what to do next.

Thanks for your help

Are you actually giving it a 5.1 source?

Update - I have the centre working its just the two surround rear speakers.

I am unsure of what you mean by 5.1 source

Sexy Update - I now have all speakers working, and it sounds fabulous, t'was a simple matter of delving into the right settings. I just wish they had given me a paper copy of the instructions and not relied on a cd to contain the manual. It would have been much easier to manage if i could have sat in front of the thing experimenting with the right settings.

Still, thanks for your reply

What settings exactly? Because if you're using something like dolby prologic, that isn't 'real' 5.1, you'd just be upmixing stereo. What i meant by source was were you just playing music, which is stereo and will therefore only use 2 speakers and the sub, or a surround sound DVD or game.

I had to change the Advanced Surround to EXT. STEREO which will "give multi channel sound to a stereo source, using all your speakers"

I haven't played a game but i am using my tv, freeview box, blu rays and radio (sadly just AM/FM ). I still have to wire in my dvd player as its so old it doesn't have a HDMI port.

That's as I thought, you're not actually getting 5.1, you're just playing stereo through all your speakers.

What would my next step be to get true 5.1 sound then? Is there an option I have overlooked? I will hit the instructions again and see if anything jumps out -sigh-

For the most part you'll want to leave your receiver to "Auto Surround." You can select it with the button on your remote that says, "Auto/Direct." Note that when "Direct" is selected you will only have two channel audio.

If you do not hear audio from your surround speakers it may just be that the movie is at a quiet spot. You can check that they are working by using a THX test disc or track. Many movies that are THX certified will include test software, like most Pixar films.

Also, read the manual. It really is important to make sure you are getting the most out of your new receiver. Enjoy your new stereo!

Happy gaming,
