I think this has to do with the ATI driver update but im trying to play Planescape but it keeps stuttering and my FPS is actually pretty bad when im scrolling or clicking on stuff. This is pretty annoying so I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this?

The game was fine before the driver update? If it was then go back to the old drivers and all should be well.

Yeah, I don't think it's a question of the computer having enough performance: (If this is the same Planescape Torment game from 1999)

System requirements

Minimum

* 200MHz CPU w/ MMX
* 32MB RAM
* 4MB video card
* 4X CD-ROM drive
* DirectX 6.1
* 650MB available hard disk space
* Windows 95/98

Perhaps - if your cpu is a dual-core - try starting the game - tabbing-out - open task manager - right-click on the exe and set affinity to CPU 0 instead of CPU 0 and CPU 1.

Other than that, I don't know. - A game that I had trouble with on my PC was Jedi Academy - it's like all my stuff is too fast - so it runs very sluggish - and I run Crysis on Very High settings.

Ok

Right Click on Desktop / Properties / Settings / Advanced / Troubleshoot / Hardware Acceleration

Lower it to one above minimum and Ok see how that works.

Well that fixed the stutter and framerate but now I get graphical glitches and stuff. So does that mean that the stutters are coming from the new drivers?

Try lowering the bar further if that fails go higher than before until you find a good setting.

I know nothing about ATI Cards but honestly your Driver is unimportant when trying to run something as old as Planescape Torment.

If the lowering and the highering of Hardware accelaration fails and you still get the glitches try setting your ATI Card to its basic settings sadly i cant help i have never owned an ATI card i only buy Nvidia.

Disabling things like Triple Buffering or V Sync may well help.

Tell me what exactly are the glitches you are refering to?

Oh and if the game was fine before a Driver update then Roll back your Drivers IE uninstall them and reinstall the old ones.

Nope I tried all the seting and the same results. Its pretty annoying considering that this game is only 2D.

1. Download and install Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 or 2007.

2. Create a vitual HD

3. Install Windows 98 SE on the virtual HD

4. Run Windows 98 through Virtual PC

5. Install Planescape Torment

6. Play the game with excelent performance, stability and no black boxes around magic spells.

Better yet, get a retro PC for older games. Windows 98 SE, Pentium III with a 3Dfx Voodoo card ensures that you can pretty much run any PC game ever made.

Try changing to software acceleration in Planescape settings (I think there's an option to do that). Or just try tweaking the graphical settings until it starts working.

Then you do not play a lot of older games.

Most games from 95-00 that aren't DOS based always have some kind of problems with newer hardware. Some of them can be fixed, some of them can't. I can't get Red Faction and Alien vs Predator to run properly on my PC, and I have tried EVERYTHING. It was a HUGE pain in the arse to get System Shock 2 working on my new PC (and it still sometimes locks up).

I'd rather have an older PC that can play all these games without any glitches, tweaking or emulation. Some of the older games that are based on 3Dfx Glide still can't be emulated properly. But hey, maybe that's just me. I still play DOS games on real DOS too.

That is odd considering System Shock 2 worked with this on Vista, http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,392 and a few compatibility boxes being checked. Most old games work out quite well and for the ones that don't a virtual drive solves most if not all problems. The only game I can not run at all is X-Com UFO Defense and that was solved by just using the dos version.

Really? I had to change some options in Nvidia control panel, use SS2 tool and compability fix, and set it to use one core only.

It still locks up after a few hours of gameplay.

And I have a lot of other games that simply do not work with newer hardware. It doesn't look like it's getting any better either.

I'd rather just have a PC from around that time to play old games on. No glitches, no patching, no nothing - they just work.

Tweaking the graphical setting only make it more unplayable and their is no software mode.

What version of catalyst are you using? I have a 4870 myself and I've been getting errors playing old games like Thief 1 after version 9.5. Rolling back to 9.4 seemed to fix the problem, not sure if it will help you out with Planescape though.
