I've searched and searched for combo setups and I've narrowed it all down to the following rig. I do have a few questions I'll get to at the end. Please offer any thoughts or recs.

CPU and PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.218098

GPU and Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.233996

RAM and HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.231006

Mobo and OS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.234363

CD/DVD drive: pick one up at a local retail store

Sound card: Is it worth getting one?

Big question: will the RAM work with this system? The detail says its specifically designed for the Intel i7 chip. Also, will the 750W PSU be sufficient for the system? I do not plan on adding a second video card.

Let me know your thoughts - real anxious to hear what experienced builders have to say.

Thanks

For the 750watts, thats overkill for ur system, u could buy a good quality 600watt and it would do fine.

The ram u have is ddr3, im not sure if the mobo has a ddr3 slot. If its ddr2, then u need to find ddr2 ram.

Thanks for the responses. Yea, the mobo supports DDR3 1600. Good to know the 750W is sufficient. I was having a tough time pairing up a power supply... the CPU and PSU combo I have seems to be the best deal - so I'll run with 750W for now.

Would anyone recommend a different case? I was looking at the Antec Nine Hundred, but this NZXT seemed pretty sweet.

Antec 900 is really good, its got great airflow, I haven't heard of NZXT so I can't comment.

The Tempest is pretty much the exact same as the Antec 900 (it was obviously inspired by it), and it is a quality case, only thing is it is a little bit bigger than most mid-tower cases.

the ram will work but you wont get true dual channel unless you only use 2 sticks or get a forth.

DO NOT buy a sound card, the built in sound controller is just fine if this build is compatible ,then it's the best AMD build i've ever seen

you might wanna bring a full tower case,in case you wanted to use crossfire later

Eh I wouldn't go with a rosewill psu, their was just a thread on how someones 2 week old rosewill psu blew up, stick to a more reputable brand like antec or corsair.

I'll check out the PSU situation. Would I benefit from having only 4gig RAM vs. the 6gig because of the dual channel ability?

Another question: when DX11 comes out - am I only looking at a video card upgrade or would the whole dang system need to be upgraded?

Well, I would recommend 4gbs of dual channel, it will be plenty, and about direct x 11 you won't have to upgrade the whole system just I would recommend getting windows 7 b/c it will support dx 11.(You can still use a dx 11 card in vista though.) Edit i see you got the free upgrade win 7 coupon with vista ultimate.

I was reading that the Phenom II X4 processors are not able to utilize the 1600 RAM.... eventhough the AMD motherboard supports 1600 DDR3, the processors do not...

Can anyone confirm if this is true?

I would stay away from the rosewill PSU. Also you could probably get a bigger hard drive for about the same price

The rosewill PSU brand is very very good. The guy had a blown capacitor, could happen to ANY brand.

Eh I'm not bashing Rosewill, I just still feel alot more safe with imo opinion the more expensive brands because you get what you pay for. Anyways alot of cheaper psus claim they can put out a certian wattage while in reality they can only put out that wattage at insanely low temps. Again I'm not saying Rosewill sucks I just don't think there that great. Watch this video about the "cheapie" power supplies http://www.corsair.com/cinema/movie.aspx?id=622747

Why did you pick the HD 4890 over the GTX 275? I'm looking to buy one and always like asking people why they chose their video card. Or was it just because it was in the combo?

Great build. I can personally vouche for the NZXT Tempest, it's a really great case. Great airflow and size, easily enough for dual or even tri SLI/crossfire.

I just built a rig for a friend with nearly the exact same specs, except a GTX 260 Core 216 superclocked instead of the 4890, maxes out Crysis Warhead @ 1024x768 @ a constant 50fps.

The PSU is a bit overkill, I suggest you either get an 850W if you want xfire in the future(the board supports it, I believe) or a 600W if you're not going to go down that route.

The GTX 275 and 4890 are nearly identical in terms of performance, just the GTX 275 has PhysX and CUDA. What kind of deal you get should be the only deciding factor between the two.

while onboard is fine a nice creative x-fi card is better and worth the money if your into good sound.

Thanks for all the input. I'm going to check on these combos and make sure they are still available.

I'm still curious though, am I going to get the full benefit of having 1600 RAM on these AMD motherboards? I read AMD does not support this yet... only 1333. Intel's support 1600, but not AMD. Can anyone confirm this is true?

Someone asked why I'm going with the 4890 over a 285. I just prefer radeon cards...

Hey, would dropping down to a 4850 from a 4890 be a real noticable performance difference? (I founda 4850 really cheap - about $100)...

CortezThePirate
Yes, that would be a significant drop. The 4850 is worse than the GTX 260, while the 4890 is equal with the GTX 275/280. As for the RAM speed, it's not a huge issue regardless. Some AMD boards do support it, but you have to OC the RAM to that speed, you can't get it native.
