Okay, so I was debating getting a new TV. I've been looking at Samsung TVs, just because they are the only ones I've researched. My question is:

Instead of debating the merits of 120 Hz for smoother pictures or 240 Hz, should I just get a plasma TV since they run at 600 Hz natively thus eliminating the need for the discussion. I want it for gaming and watching Blu-Ray movies. I have been looking at the 50" PN50650. I can get one for $1000-$1200. The other LCDs cost more and aren't as smooth I'm guessing.

What do you think?

I'm not going into detail but I have to mention it...120hz/240hz on an LCD and 600hz on a plasma is apples to oranges...COMPLETELY different things. Hertz ratings on a plasma is clever marketing started by Panasonic last year with 480hz and now for this year they are all 600hz...but it has nothing to do with 120/240 on an LCD...Although generally speaking plasma handles motion slightly better than a 240hz LCD...That being said...

What you go with is completely up to personal opinion. LCD is generally going to be brighter, more vivid, in some cases a bit "sharper." Plasma is going to have slightly better motion and more "natural" color, but that means more subdued, like a movie theater type quality.

Personally, I think movies look better on plasma and games look better on LCD.

The Samsung PN50B650 is a fantastic plasma can't go wrong their. Similar priced/size LCD models would also be in the 6 series, including the LN52B610 (BJs/Costco/Sam's exclusive) LN52B630, LN55B640 (Best Buy exclusive), and LN55B650.

Goodluck!

120/240Hz is a technology specific to LCD's since plasmas do not need such technology as they do not have the inherent motion lag that is present in all LCD panels. If you like the "vivid" and oversaturated modes on TV's then yes, LCD can be brighter and more "vivid," but if you calibrate TV's to THX settings or any other setup disc, then plasma will look equivalent to LCd, but usually with a smoother and more natural picture.

Get the cheaper one. At this point it's a win-win. Both technologies are well established and with decent pictures.

Get that TV, it's the same one i bought 2 months ago and i LOVE it:D

It's a fantastic deal and looks great with movies or games, even HD cable/satellite looks awesome.

Plasmas are very different when it comes to the 600Hz "subfield" motion drive and a LCDs native Hz rating, they're simply not the same thing and use different technology all together. Plasmas are going to handle motion better, little or no ghosting, much richer darks, and the contrast ratio is absolutely unmatched by LCDs. The only better option would be a LED TV, but i don't think you're going to want to drop a few thousand more into that.
