After watching some gameplay videos from Assassin's Creed 2 I decided I really want this game, despite Ubisofts DRM thingy..

However, I have never played the first sequel of the game, would you say it's needed to keep up with the story in the second one? I don't really mind getting it, since I understand it's a great game aswell, but the AC2 is what really interests me since I've read that most people find AC2 to be more fun than the first.

AC1 story is a bit contrived. Not to mention, it is exceedingly repetitive. I haven't even bothered finishing the game. imo i would rather just go wiki the plot line and read it then play AC2.

Hmm, as someone who played the first one, but hasn't played the second, I'd say you could get away with it.

From what I've seen the second one continues directly where the first one left off, but the story is fairly simple and doesn't require you to play the game through to understand it, so I'd just read up on the story first then jump straight into the 2nd one.

I'll hopefully get the second installement when Ubisoft realise how to run a business properly, which could take some time...

Either that or wait for a crack.

I got bored really quick with AC1. They look pretty similiar, so I'd just go with AC2 if you must. They should be punished for this DRM though. I won't be getting AC2, but like AC1 ($5) I probably would've waited 'till it was a lot cheaper anyway.

I found AC1 to be more interesting of the two. I have yet to finish ACII because I just got bored with it.. I guess I'm the complete opposite of everyone else :P I'd recommend playing the first if you really want to get into the story and backstory, but it won't be NECESSARY to play or enjoy the second game.

AC2 is pretty much the exact same gameplay as 1, but with everything improved quite a bit. If you want to play many, many hours as an assassin, yes get the first. Otherwise, I'd recommend just reading the plot of the first one and then getting the second.

You should get the first one, it's not a bad game, I think it's a great one if you can overlook the repetition of it, besides. The story is quite good.

I feel exactly the same. AC1 is repetitive, but somehow I enjoyed the game so much that ended up doing all there is to do in the game(kill all templars, get all flags, viewpoits)after I finished it. And after that,I would just stroll around the cities stealing people, killing them and just juping around. With AC2(a better game,I admit)I just finished it and never played it again. Never got the same feeling that I did with the first.

If you like stories in games you should get AC1. If you like gameplay get AC2. If you don't play AC1 you wont be missing out on much. Aside from the beggining and who Altair is you'll pretty much understand everything else in the story

Do not play AC1 - it is a boring piece of trash that ruins its plot in the first hour.

AC2 for PC - you will encounter bad issues with DRM cutting in and out doing weird things.

Its Ubisoft's brilliant way of thanking its fans for support.

Okay, guys, come on. Let's not start spreading this nonsense. There are virtually no problems with the DRM whatsoever. I can enthusiastically confirm that I've been playing Assassin's Creed 2 for 48 hours, off and on, and have not experienced one single problem. I wouldn't even have known the DRM was there if I hadn't been following this debate. It runs in the background, silently. I have no idea why Gamespot got cut off - I can only assume that they were playing a pre-release copy, and the servers weren't quite ready yet. I have roughly a dozen people I know from around the world who are all mad passionate PC gamers, and each one of them has been playing AC 2 to death. Two guys I know have even finished it already. Not one person has reported EVER being booted out of the game. Let's not spread nonsense like this okay. You guys who don't own the game, and don't like the DRM, really need to play fair. I get it that you don't like the DRM, but I'm sorry, it's not 'cutting in and out and doing weird things' - it's not.

I was the same, I think my personal reasons is how the game is structured though. The first game felt more like you were an assassin, doing assassin work. You had to gather intel about your target before moving in for the kill. It did become rather repetitive though as there were too few intel gathering missions and you ended up repeating them. But the structure itself was a lot more unique than most open-world games, and so I felt encouraged to play it more. The second game's structure was just a pretty generic open-world one. "Go here and do a mission for this guy, which unlocks the next mission."

I wouldn't even bother buying AC2, if you know what I mean. The fact that Ubisoft thinks that they can publish this is beyond me. Not only will you have a high price point, but you wont be able to play without being connected to the Internet, and apparently according to the video review exclusively on Gamespot you can't even connect half the time regardless if your connection is stable or not. Looks like you'll get the better experience elsewhere.

I think it would help immensely, especially at the start then you know what the hell is going on. Plus there are very obvious references to the first game and in some cases I think you'd be missing puzzle pieces without it. If you can I'd recommend buying it and just doing the main stuff (no collecting or side mission stuff) It will also make you appreciate the sequel much more. My answer is yes.

Then the game you want is AC2 and not the first. Trust me on that. Get the second, finish it and if you want more get the first. AC1 is not even nearly as good as it poses to be.

Agreed. 2nd one is the far better game. Just Google and read the backstory of AC1 to get up to speed.
