I have finished my first playthrough about an hour ago.

And I have just one thing to solemnly state: WOW! DOUBLE-WOW!

I'm forcing my memory here and I honestly don't remember the last time I played anything half as good, immersive, atmospheric, astoundingly fun with a capital F!! And I have played a lot!

Contrary to most games, the (already amazing) quality here only improves as the story unfolds.

I couldn't feel the time passing, I was like mesmerized.

This is just a hint for those who haven't played it yet:

If you like excellent first-person shooters;

if you like excellent stealth games;

and if you are, like me, a fanatic for immersion and atmosphere, don't think twice: grab this game and be happy. Believe me, you won't get disappointed.

For those who care about graphics, I must say with certainty that they are pretty good even for today's standards; and I have no doubt that the revamped Butcher Bay version that you get with the sequel (Assault on Dark Athena) will please you. A lot. No, I'm not biased, I've seen it and it rocks! ;)

Preparing to enter Dark Athena now... :D

EDIT: Here some screens:

Completely agree! I played through Buther bay And Dark Athena soon after, and they are easily the best games I have plyed in some time. Butcher bay is better though IMO

Butcher Bay was so fun, I jsut remember thinking this game wouldnt be very good and then being blown away at how it pulled me in.

The atmosphere was great and the gameplay was fun.

I really should give the 2nd one a try (:

I bought the new one but I jsut ended up playing the remastered version of Butcher Bay again haha. Ill give the new one a chance sometime after im done with the new games i have.

It's great because its one of the only games based on a film that is actually very good.

I was VERY pleased with the game and have been dissapointed that Tigon Studios never released more games. They have 5 listed on the site, but only a few have been released and there was no current news :(

Actually, the story has nothing to do with the Chronicles of Riddick: the movie...

I prefer the game big time... ;)

It' a very well produced game. A few parts of it are a little wonky but overall it's just very satisfying experience.

That's probably why it's so much better than the average movie-based game. They focused on just making a good game instead of trying to copy something over from a very different medium. I got the original Riddick game... the one that came out for the big black and green original Xbox. :)

Indeed. Out of a bad movie came a surprisingly good game. I thought it really captured the feeling of being in a futuristic prison. The escape attempts feel genuinely suspenseful. And it successfully mixes in elements of RPGs, stealth games, and adventure games.

Well said TC, excellent games. I have been meaning to replay them here soon. Super fun games. I also like Vin Desil in this, not really a fan of him though. His voice is awesome for video games though.

I agree, TC. It is a really good game...certainly an often overlooked game. People are missing out if they haven't played it. :)

Not sure which one it was, Butcher bay or Dark athena. I think it was the first. I was at some gaming cafe and played it for 5 minutes then i just quit. I had to crouch and crawl through a vent(if that helps you remember which one it was). I dunno, it didnt pull me at all, it felt like a clone of everything else, did i misjudge this. Tell me what you think.

The vent part is in the first one. And yes, I would say give it another try and give it more than 5 minutes. It's an awesome game.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the game won GameSpot's award for Best Game No One Played in 2004. I was expecting the game to be bad when it was released in 2004, but it really was a pleasant surpirse. I think Vin Diesel's voice acting really made this game shine.

Yeah, you can't appreciate the game instantly. It doesn't jump at you with its awesomness, but instead grows on you. You'll realize how great it is soon enough.

I have the original PC game (boxed version) and, since I also bought Dark Athena on Steam, the BB version that came with it too.

Eons ago I was playing Butcher Bay but I had to format my PC, so I backed up my saved games; when I purchased Dark Athena I found out that I couldn't use them with the newer Butcher Bay version. Since I was far in the game, having to start over was a real let down.

I'm glad I finally decided to play it through: the experience was really amazing, to put it lightly.

This game has one thing that is one of the rarest I can find while playing games in general: there is not even one part boring, not a moment when you feel that the game would be better without this or that: you don't get tired of it no matter what. That familiar moment when you ask for the end is absent in Butcher Bay: on the very contrary, you just want to keep playing... 8)

.... actually, I think it does; it was supposed to be the prequel to "Pitch Black", which then led us to the "Chronicles of Riddick" (the movie).

I'm playing Dark Athena (the sequel) all day today (I'm about to finish it, maybe one hour more, possibly less) and I must say: I will NEVER EVER AGAIN trust a Gamespot review!

I'm talking about the single player campaign, since I do not like multiplayer: the review is pure BS! I could write a novel here about it, but to cut it short: Dark Athena may not the the masterpiece Butcher Bay was, but it is a very rock solid sequel.

If my PC hasn't frozen forcing me to reboot, I would have finished it in one playthrough!

There is NOTHING tedious or repetitive about it, and the second part (when you arrive at the planet Aguerra) is as atmospheric as it can get! The whole game is almost as immersive as the prequel, so reading the review again I feel it is referring to another game, I don't get it; can't be the same game.

Know what I HONESTLY think? The producers haven't paid enough, or at all, and that's why the game got what it got. Period.

I've learned to take gaming reviews with a grain of salt.

This game has always been in the back of my mind, waiting for me to pick it up. I played it for a short period of time on the original Xbox and didn't think much of it, but the PC gamers on this site have never steered me wrong when it comes to game purchases. If it's that good, then I'm gonna give it a second chance. Dark Athena will more than likely be the next title I get.

Loved Escape from Butcher Bay back when I played it on the Xbox.

Didn't like Assault on Dark Athena very much. They completely ruined the stealth gameplay.

BTW I found Dark Athena on Amazon for $5.99, just a heads up if anyone's interested in getting the game.

Apparently, there was this whole uproar about the disc version's install-limit DRM. I'm not changing my hardware anytime soon (barring any hardware failures, of course), so I'm not that concerned by it.

Respectfully disagree. :)

Ok, it takes a while before you can put your hands in the tranq gun (to quietly break the lights), but even in the open spaces under the sun there's always another route where you can go unnoticed.

I had no trouble playing stealth; on the contrary, it was a hell of a fun. ;)
