A danish player of EVE Online attempted to buy "virtual goods" worth 17.900 USD from OwnYourGame over 3 months via Visa/Paypal. The goods was never delivered, and the player has now sued the danish bank who issued the Visa card. The court has however denied any guilt on behalf of the bank (Nordea) because the transaction was through Paypal and not straight through the credit card.

"Player cheated of 18k USD in EVE Online" My First Impression : Good. This is why you shouldn't handle in-game transactions with real money. Even if you get away with it, you could easily lose your cash if something gets screwed up.

Well put. Besides that, why would anyone spend 18k for a game? That is preposterous. Even if it was God mode + all weapons + all worlds + infinite ammo (or any other awesome things in EVE), it would not be worth 18k, or even 100 dollars. Perfect example of people with their priorities completely out of line.

I think he deserved what he got.Buying gold or items on the internet for mmo's is not allowed i think, only if it is an official online store.Cheater got what he deserved and maybe he learned something out of this...like stop playing mmo's if you can't play fair! :D

It's the perfect business opportunity this. You advertise fake digital goods (works best for Eve) and when a desperate, middle aged no lifer appears desperately wanting that starship +7, he will pay his life's wages for it. You then say thanks and never speak to him again. Rince and Repeat with different sites and goods.

You are completely protected by doing this because the person cannot sue anyone (you aren't an enterprise with any contact details - if you do, they should be fake) and they cannot complain openly about it because he instantly becomes branded as an abuser of unfairly gained content. I don't want to generate any funny ideas here, it's just to highlight how easy it can be to rip people off whilst being protected by simply being anonymous.

People who buy into this virtual item provision for real cash is just ludicrous, they deserve to have their money taken from them if they are THAT desperate and stupid.

It'd probably be cheaper to buy a used Semi and 10,000 small hot wheels vehicles than to purchase a Titan in EVE online

There's a difference between someone who tries to learn a language and one who ruins it on purpose ( l33t speakers).

Someone who tries to learn English or any other language shouldn't be insulted for making a honest mistake.

As far as Nordea is concerned Pay-pal is to be used at ones own risk, they take no responsibility over how you use your money. So yeah, too bad for him cause it's his own fault, not the Bank's.

It's pretty amazing that native english speakers ever bother to talk trash about non-natives not being perfect at the language, given that we almost never learn other languages, we sound just as stupid when we do, AND english is one of the most incredibly nonsensical languages in the world. invaluable? means of value beyond estimation, even though 'in-' as a prefix means 'not' (invisible, invalid, indivisible), and the word should be 'unvaluable' instead if we actually followed our own rules.

English is awesome. Not to be overbearing, but we have more adjectives than any other language in existence. Hence, our literature is more advanced and more descriptive, therefore, better. I do not mean this offensively, because I've extensively studied German, Latin, and French, and all are beautiful languages. Simply, English is far more descriptive and therefore far superior. Otherwise, I regret that a player lost 18k in online transactions, but to put that much real money on the line for artificial items; it kind of speaks to the intelligence level of the individual at hand.

I wonder what he was trying to get that was "worth," at a low guestimate, 256 billion isk.

A fully officer fitted titan might cover half to two-thirds of that.

If you give somebody real money for virtual goods you are paying for absolutely nothing; he payed for nothing and he got nothing.

That said, somebody who is willing to spend 18k on pixels is clearly beyond help.

That probably wasn't even his own money. Perhaps his mum gave him some money he could buy an apartment and move out of the house (the guy is clearly 40+ years old). Imagine the suprise when she saw him weeping in the garage with Eve Online open saying: OWNT!

He didn't spend his money, he just ran up 17,000 on his credit card. That is gonna take forever to pay off. On topic, I can't believe this guy spent 17000 all at once. If I wanted to buy in-game items I would buy one and see if it was reliable. But why would you buy in-game items it takes away the since of pride when after all those hours of work you got the uber sword or something. I however gave up on mmorpgs because I was playing wow for awhile but by level 68 it began to fell like a job I had to pay for.

Either a guy which money is not a limited resource to him, or a guy with a huge addiction along with other pyschological problems.. I am willing to bet the second point, because I don't think if he had the money to throw away like that he wouldn't of really cared about losing that kind of money.

Exactly... Unless he pays that off fast... that $18,000 in charges is going to wind up costing him $100,000+ if not several hundred thousand over the coarse of a couple years... credit card interest is beast... up to 30% at some places... he is going to be spending a lot more than that $18,000...
