Would it be okay to play Thief 3 first? Or would I not understand the plot? I do plan on playing 1 and 2, it's justyyou have to do a lot to make them work properly. And I'm not sure if they play well today.

The third game is stand-alone enough that you'd be fine with the plot and gameplay, but certain bits (like the museum section, or the very end) will be a lot more awesome if you've played through the first game at least.
So yeah, you'd have no trouble understanding the plot, but playing them in order would give you the best understanding of the setting and characters. Plus the first two games are still outstanding if you can overlook the graphics, so if you plan on buying them all, it couldn't hurt to wait to play them in order.
I already have them all actually :) I have a boxed setThe third game is stand-alone enough that you'd be fine with the plot and gameplay, but certain bits (like the museum section, or the very end) will be a lot more awesome if you've played through the first game at least.

What he said, plus the fact that all of the prior Thief games are just plain fun.I would recommend you to start with thief 1 because it's a great introduction to the series. Sure you can go for thief 3 instead but it would be far more enjoyable if you know Garrett's story better. Have fun

Mmm, slighty. Sad I know. It was still a pretty good game. In my opinion, none of them are as viciously awesome as the first one.
