I would like to buy a PC game as a birthday gift for a work colleague and I don't know what to get.

The problem is, he's very picky - he doesn't like strategy games, sim games or MMOGs (because he doesn't have much spare time to play them). Preferably, it should be a game that can be played in small blasts and has a storyline to keep him interested.

He already has Oblivion (he really liked it but didn't finish it), Prey (didn't really like it), Doom 3 (didn't really like it), Call of Duty (he liked it but didn't finish it), Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (didn't like it), Splinter Cell Double Agent (never even played it), Football Manager 2005 (couldn't get into it), Tomb Raider Legend (he really liked it, nearly finished it) and Half Life 2 (he really liked it and actually finished it).

So ideally I'd like to buy a game that is really good, has a good storyline and is short and addictive enough for him to actually finish it.

Could you please recommend some games for me?

Thanks in advance :)

If he's _that_ picky, you could always just get him a voucher, as then at least you won't run the risk of offending him or not getting a game that lives up to his standards. Or, if he really liked Half Life 2, how about getting him Episode One, which is the next chapter in the Half LIfe story.

did he try the hitman series? The games are very involving, the storyline doesn't really need to be moving, but the game in itself is very good.

If he likes a good storyline, he should like FarCry, It may be "old" by gaming standards, but it is original and beautifully perfected (if that makes any sense? :P)

He's my boss (the person who pays me) so I would effectively be giving him money back and that would be a bit weird. Plus he doesn't follow games so he wouldn't know what to get himself either.

Apparently the game only lasts 5 hours of gameplay, so if you're going for a game he won't forget, think of something original

No he hasn't tried Hitman or Far Cry. They sound good. Thanks for the suggestion.

OK. 5 hours is probably a bit too short.

Then you can get him that pack which includes episode one and as soon as episode 2 comes out he can play that too :D

I don't think he would want that if it is similar to the first game (which he has).

OK, so far it looks like I need to choose from: Hitman Blood Money Far Cry Half Life 2 Episode One Serious Sam 2 At the moment I'm leaning towards Half Life 2 Episode One unless someone else has a new suggestion.

Hitman blood money is a good idea. The missions are relatively short and contained, but still fun and interesting.

Swat 4 has short contained missions too.

Far Cry is too long and hard for someone with limited gaming-attention. (Far Cry is a great game though)

you could try Condemned Criminal Origins for the PC, about the only complaint I hear about it is it's too short.  FEAR is also along those same lines.

I'd have to reccomend Far Cry over Hitman; Hitman is, in ways, pretty similar to Splinter Cell, and he doesn't seem to be interested in that one. HL2: Ep 1 is more of an "expansion" than a game in it's own right, imo.

Plus I have just found it for £9.99 (that's about $20) brand new! Excellent choice.

Based on his preferences:  I would say of all the previous suggestions the two best tailored to him are FEAR and FarCry.   How old are you talking about going on pc games?  There are some classics, but maybe he cares about graphics just as much as the game play.  If he doesn’t; then you can get some tried and true oldies and also save some $ or get more bang for the same amount of $.

Poor guy: someone that picky being subjected to GRAW.  I am surprised he still likes games after that  :-)  I tried to play the game several times and finally gave it up.

I think anything from the last couple of years is fine.

Of course, the older they are, the cheaper they are :) I'm going to buy FEAR, I think.

SWAT4, FEAR and Blood Money. SWAT has quite a unique gameplay. FEAR is the same old FPS  that you've played 100 times before but the story and scary parts are pretty cool. Blood Money... Well, it's the famous Hitman gameplay but more improved. I would go for Blood Money.

You don't want to give him Episode One. It's WAY too short, 3 to 5 hours. It's really a rip of, it's just some new singleplayer missions. Looking at the previous games that he didn't like, I don't think you want to give him Serious Sam. It seems he doesn't like mindless shooting without any storyline. Actually, now that I'm looking trough that list again, I don't think he will like FEAR.

Max Payne 1 & 2, Fable, and Half Life 2: Episode 1 are all safe bets I'd say. I've also heard that the Sam and Max games are pretty short and fun.

I agree that farcry is a good choice. I have similar tastes and am easily bored at sinlge player games, but i liked farcry. that it is older just means you can play with max settings. if you could also find an old copy of undying you could throw that in as a bonus and still pay less than a new run game.

Mass Effect. All the way. If you're looking for a short, addictive game, definitely Mass Effect. It's third person, far too short for a normal person, good quality, and has a revolutionary story, it's perfect so long as he's not younger than 10. And you aren't dirt poor. Sorry I couldn't get here in time.

So short games that are involving, The Orange Box is a good idea, although he already has Half Life 2. They are all fairly short games with a good multiplayer game if he wants to play that every once in a while.
