I just finished building my (kind of) gaming computer yet it has a problem. I just tried running Skyrim. and even on low settings the game is almost impossible to play due to a mediocre frame rate. Given the specs on my computer, I thought I would be able to run the game on Normal settings at the very least with no problems.

Processor-Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500 CPU @ 3.30GHz

RAM- 8GB

Graphics Card- Radeon 6870 HD

The only thing I can think of is that I am currently outputting my video through my motherboard rather than my graphics card. Could that be the reason why my performance is suffering so badly? Thanks in advance!!!!

Yes, the dvi cable goes into the 6870 not the motherboard.

That is exactly it. Plug the monitor into the graphics card, check that you have the latest driver, and give Skyrim a second chance.

If YOU think thats the problem why not just try the cable in the graphics card? But yea as the others have said move it and it will run fine.

Thanks for all the help guys, but I have encountered another problem. When I plug in my DVI cable to output through the GPU, the monitor says there is no input data available. The GPU fan is running, but the computer doesn't seem to recognize the GPU at all. Any ideas on what is going wrong? Thank you all in advance.

UMMM You installed the drivers ??? Go to ATI website, find drivers/updates, write down the page with your drivers, delete the orginal drives installed, reboot computer, open explorer( words/ screen looks crazy big and hard to read then you are good), go to the web page that you wrote down reinstall the drivers and all updates, Reboot

Apart from installing drivers, make the PCI-E gpu as the default gpu in bios.

Make sure you actually plugged in the PCI-E cables to your GPU, connecting it to your PSU for power.

Try everything that has been said above...... if still nothing the card might be dead on arrival (it happened to me once).

itll be the onboard still enabled in bios. disable the onboard vga before you switch cables to your gpu. and make sure the gpu is powered. it needs direct power from your psu. your psu should have some pcie power cables which fit the graphics card

Unfortunately that could be the issue. But I would try doing the troubleshooting that everyone else has been suggesting first before you send it back
