If she like strategy go with some of the older Civilizations you cant go wrong there and there is hours of gameplay plus its low on the system requirements... Try Civilization III or 4 there should be a big pack that comes with all the expansions as well...

Not really.

You can create a family, like, a child, dad, or just a normal single woman. you can change how they look and name them.

then you buy a house, or, you build a own house, which is kinda fun.

After you have built the house, you move in there, if you a kid, he goes to school sometimes. You have to pay bills too, so you have to get money somehow. ( You can get jobs ). Accidents can happen in the home. Your character might even die....

You can decorate your house with cute things, and you can also tell the Sim what to do, like, cook a meal!

Oh, forgot to mention, you have to take care of them, their stamina/hunger and so on will decrease and they will become sick...

You can probably do a lot of other things but i have just played the old version

EDIT: to check specs. press the Windows button, or click on the START icon left of the screen, choose  "Run(?)" , ( is it called run? I dunno, i dont have a english version ) then type  DxDiag and a little screen will appear.

the sims 2 is a great game for wives and girlfriends.  basically games that let you raise and take care of something like animal crossing, viva pinata etc.  also if you have a wii she will love wii sports and cooking mama.  if you only have a pc go for the sims 2

Yeah, I gotta say go for The Sims 2. (or Sims 1) The idea behind it, according to Will Wright (the creator), is that planning out your day-to-day life and chores and alloting enough time to do these things is a form of strategy. Go ahead and read GameSpot's review for The Sims 2, and then decide if it is something your wife might like. Heck, I'm a guy and I love the game! Creating your own town, building houses, decorating them, creating families... it can eat up a lot of time. You only control 1 family at a tim, though. Which is good. Controlling a family of 5 or 6 is a very hard task!

If Sims isn't to her liking, try the Civilization series. If your wife enjoys sci-fi stuff, maybe give Galatic Civilizations II a try. GalCiv II is a great strategy game and is very indepth.
