Ok I've been sticking to FPS's and such forever now. I occasionally went to STALKER and Bioshock, which was a little more on the RPG side. I hated RTS's always. Now I kind of want to try some RPG's. Never tried any before. I really want one that has a good story and really good fighting mechanics like cool kills and such. I heard the Witcher was good, but I don't know. Please, and recomendations welcome!

You sound EXACTLY like me. It's almost weird - I play mostly FPS, I hate RTS, and RE4 is my favorite game of the decade..... I was an RPG noob until I bought Oblivion & The Witcher...... Oblivion is eh but The Witcher is great. Try the Witcher demo.

Start with the classics. You can't go wrong with the Baldur's Gate series, Fallouts, and Planescape: Torment.

If you want to ease yourself into the genre, you should probably play Oblivion.

It isn't very deep, and feels like a shooter at times...but it's an entertaining 'first RPG' that will introduce you to the features of the genre without bogging you down with stats and choices.

*Edit* The Witcher is fantastic, but it's difficult to recommend to anyone other than RPG fans.

Hellgate London is a pretty good action rpg game as well, lots of actions, and things exploding, seems right up your alley.

I'd have to agree with Zorlac666, Hellgate: London is a great choice. A lot of the probs they had at launch have been fixed with patches and you have 3 different groups of characters to choose from. Swords, guns or the cabalist (focus energy weap or summoner) Play through the single player or jump straight into the multi-player. I played the first vampire game, Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption, so I didn't care much for Bloodlines, but you might. Amazingly enough I found WoW incredibly fun and most of my experience previously had been FPS games. Good luck in finding the games you enjoy. :)

This may be a little off topic but does KOTOR have a demo? I checked google and nothing really came up except patches...

What they said...

oh, and Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, extremely fun and very noob friendly, and one of the most Unique games I've ever played, one time my friend asked "so what's this game like?" and I couldn't come up with an answer.

Oh, and it's 20 bucks.

Divine Divinty should be sufficient to test the waters. Don't let the horrible name throw you off.

Divine divinity is in all likely-hood, the worst name for a video game ever. I haven't played it myself but I hear its good, so I back up the divine divinity recommendation

Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines is a perfect beginner RPG - I recommended it to my first-timer-rpg-playing friend and he loved it - I also happen to think it's the best RPG ever made.

It has:

A very basic item system (meaning you can't break your character by using the wrong items - you also don't need to chug dozens of different potions to counter a dozen different effects you don't understand

No complicated rules - you aren't going to become blind or paralysed or be unable to cast a spell because you need to rest

A fairly basic class system - and all the classes are clearly defined, and quite iconic in their styles

A very simple, real time combat system

A reasonable amount of exploration without being overwhelming or confusing

A fairly simple character-building system.

It's also just ab absolute pleasure - awesome story, great atmosphere, wonderful voice acting. In fact, I think I'm gonna go replay it today. I've always been meaning to play the game as a malk.

I just picked up Beyond Divinity-according to the gamespot review its supposed to contain both Devine Divinity and Beyond Divinity the sequel.Funny though the manual doesn't mention it. I'll have to load it today and find out for sure. Sounds like a great game-definitely a lousy name though.

If you want to try and action RPG take a look at Titan Quest-great game. Also Morrowind and Icewind Dale.

It doesn't have good fighting mechanics like you want, but Morrowind is a superb RPG, easily my favorite. I've heard that the Gothic games are similar.

Oblivion is the next Elder Scrolls game after Morrowind, but it's more like an action game with stats than an RPG with fighting, if you get what I mean. Still a great game, IMO. I still need to get Shivering Isles....

I tried Fable on the Xbox, but I think my disc was defective. Haven't bought it for the PC, but you might want to try it. It is short, though.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is an excellent game, especially if you like the Star Wars universe at all. You might want to hold out on buying the sequel, The Sith Lords, until Gizka releases the more complete version (LucasArts had Obsidian rush the first one and oh boy is it apparent). Dunno when it's going to be released, though... it's already been a long time. Supposedly it's close to completion, although it still won't be a 100% complete game. Close enough, and much better than the original release.

Though I haven't played it, I recommend getting The Elder Scrolls: Arena, the first The Elder Scrolls game. It's a free download off Bethesda's site. You'll need to download DOSBox to run it, since the game was released for DOS. I have yet to do this. Don't be expecting combat even as "good" as Morrowind's, though.
