Here's 4 more great games from 1998 to vote on.......

Wow, this was a tough choice for me, 2 of the best Adventure games all-time, Bungie's best game (yep I went there with Myth 2) and also one of the best RTS games ever, not to mention a little game called Half-Life that completely re-directed the FPS world.

Had this Poll been in, say 2000, Half-Life would get my vote here. However, it didn't age well IMO, through no fault of its own, problem is, all the great things it did for the FPS genre are now commonplace, so those playing Half-Life now may not understand its greatness and the groundwork it laid, and for me its lost much of its lustre. Also, PLEASE DO NOT INCLUDE COUNTERSTRIKE WITH HALF-LIFE. I'd like the vote for these games to be out of the box but patched up.

Myth 2 IMO is Bungie's best game, and it's the reason it was a shame for PC gamer's when Microsoft scooped them up for their then new X-Box. Had I played the multiplayer before it was shut down, this game likely would have had my vote in this day and age. Wonderful game!

Grim Fandango is considered by many as one of the greatest adventure games ever, even winning GS's PC Game of the Year over all the other heavyweights!

But my pick goes to Sanitarium, that game pulls you into it so well, and it just gets more and more fascinating. There needs to be more games like this, there's nothing like it!

I've included Gameplay vids for each as well, best played at 480p or HD (if possible), hope you guys enjoy.....

So onward we go!

...........................................................................................................................................................

Grim Fandango Gameplay Sample - Scene near the beginning of the game

Half-Life Gameplay Sample - Level Interloper, on Xen(IMO toughest level in the game)

Myth 2: Soulblighter Gameplay Sample- The Stair of Grief, Part 1(God bless the dwarves!)

Sanitarium Gameplay Sample- At the start of the game

Very very tough choices. Grim Fandango, Half-Life and Myth 2: Soulblighter are the greatest in its genre. But overall, I'd say Half-Life.

Tough call between Grim Fandango and Half-Life, but I'm going to give it to Half-Life if only because HL was revolutionary and completely changed the genre whereas Grim Fandango was just the peak of it's genre.

Also, while I used to think that HL had aged poorly, I recently tried playing it again and got totally hooked. Some of the gameplay mechanics and controls are outdated, but most of the game still plays great.

It does look better with Source (though I'm more a gameplay man), and I do love the game.......just lost that luster for me, no longer in my PC Top 5 (though HL2 is, particularly the episodes)

Ouch, hopefully those who vote for a game have played at least 3 on the list and aren't just throwing a vote to HL......

well, we'll see what happens

HL is considered to be one of, if not the, best PC game of all time. Furthermore it created the formula that all FPS games since have copied. To top it off, the usage of the in-game scripted event has been used in every genre by an innumerbale amount of games. As good as the other games may be, none of them can boast such accomplishments.

Trust me, i know, I was there in PC gaming in 1998, I was there playing Half-Life......

Then again Grim Fandango may be the best Adventure game in PC gaming, and knocked out both Half-Life and Starcraft (among others) to win GS's PC game of the Year.

Myth 2 is unquestionably among the best RTS games ever, irony is, as overrated as Bungie's Halo series is, Myth 2 is a Bungie game that flew under the radar, well at least now it has (back then it was popular), despite scoring a robust 9.3 at GS in '98.

As for Sanitarium, there has never been anything quite like it since it came out, and IMO it holds up better than Half-Life, not to mention it very well may have had an influence on Planescape Torment.

All these games have pedigree, not Half-Life alone, problem is, I hope people are voting after playing at least 3, and not just picking Half-Life because its a name they know.

I know Half-Life, loved it, still do, I played the Xen levels half the people didn't bother playing. Great game, re-directed the FPS genre, but looking at these 4 now, i can't say its the best of them. I can certainly understand someone who does say that, but hopefully when they vote its not the only game they've played. I appreciate those who are honest with option 5.

I've got to give it to Grim Fandango, as much as I loved Half Life and was at least intrigued by Sanitarium. The game was loaded with charm, great writing and characters, and the wild creations of Tim Schafer's imagination, so I think I personally preferred it to the others (even if Half-Life meant more to the industry).

It's Grim Fandango for me. Closely followed by Half-Life and Myth 2.

I can't vote on this one because 1998 was when Quake 2 was in full swing. I remember that year well because I bought 2 Voodoo2 cards for SLI in March 1998. Then late in the year, European Air War came out. Between those two and the other games from 1997, I forgot about the others*.

I was also a graphics junkie at the time. Unreal had a hold on me.

*The next big year for buying games to me was 1999.

I think most comply (see last Poll, 1/3rd voted option 5)....but there's always some.

In any event its clear Half-Life is going to win this Poll.

Fallout 2 won the first Poll of 1998........I want to get 4 games from the 3 Polls for the championship, the winner of each Poll and 1 other game I'll decide on depending on votes and competition it faced.

So, keep voting if you haven't!
