FINALLY, AMD now has its Core2 equivalent CPU's out of the door (Phenom II quad and dual cores) offering just as good if not better price/performance in both the low and medium-high price ranges, and as soon as they get a little momentum going Intel is going to release their i5 CPU's which lets face it WILL be better than the Phenom II unless Intel somehow massively messes up (but looking at the i7 that doesent seem likely).

Anyway i just feel sorry for AMD, they seem to be working really hard just to keep up and as soon as they do and get a bit of positive notice Intel looks to steal it all away from them....poor AMD :(

Oh well, ATI seems to be doing pretty well for themselves...looks like they made a good investment there after all.

Your thoughts?

I don't feel it's necessary to feel sorry for them, as the company is doing quite well in sales. I agree that while AMD is a little behind Intel in the latest technologies available, AMD offers a superb value for performance that's hard to compete with. I'm not favoring one chip over the other, as I have used both in the past and have been quite happy with both companies.

While I do wish that they were more direct competition with intel in CPU performance, their first failing IMO was in joining with ATI. AMD jumped the shark for me in particular when they dropped their GPU warranty from three years to one. And now my X1600 Pro has apparently now been dropped to legacy status, which is just an excuse for ATi to try to force me into buying a new card from them. To that, I say, I'll get an nVIDIA instead.

While currently AMD may be lagging behind in cpu technology compared to Intel, they have always been in the fight - K6, versus Pentium, K6-2 versus PII, Athlon versus PIII, Athlon XP versus P4, X2/Opteron versus Pentium D/C2D - since they aquired ATI, they are also in the fight against Nvidia.

I don't really feel sorry for AMD - they always seem to have equally price/performance parts comparable to Intel and Nvidia. They are still in the game.

Currently my setup contains an AMD cpu and an Nvidia video card, and I get along just fine with them.

I dont feel sorry for them only because they are a company. I tend to have a hard time feeling sorry for faceless entities without meeting some of the people inside.

I definitely agree with the AMD/ATI merger. I now only use EVGA's Geforce video cards that come with a lifetime warranty.

I definitely agree with the AMD/ATI merger. AMD still has a 3 year warranty on their "retail" version CPUs. Did you happen to grab a OEM version? The OEMs only support a 1 year warranty.

One of the AMD CPU's I'd had was one I'd won as a prize from AMD. The last one I'd bought was a mobile Athlon XP I got from Newegg.

No,

Dont forget, AMD own ATI i think it was a good move

and they get sales because there shzzle is well priced

But, they are behind Intel... Mabe AMD should scratch computing and invest in mass pie production...

They could squash chicken and mushroom sauce down the processor manufacturing equiptment = CPU's made of 100% fresh produce chicken

New model: AMD Phenom III XChicken (Mushroom Edition)

New Slogan: The future is chicken

It would make millions... You know youd buy one

Not really, AMD is doing rather well in the mass market world. And since they got ATI, they have really brought the fight to Nivida who have been caught with their trousers down.

I don't feel sorry for them - I did feel sorry for them back in the day when they were first starting out, as their early processors were almost as much of a joke as the ones from Cyrix. I remember playing Counterstrike on a LAN with my friend - I had a slightly overclocked Celeron 300A and he had a 450Mhz K6-2. With the same Voodoo 3 cards, mine ran smoother and loaded faster.

Not really, it's usually the underdog that gets all the deals in prebuilts and there's a lot of money there. Also their ATI branch is doing well.

No The one making the wrong move is Intel. They will still waste the money on cheap core 2 duos. While Amd will move on with quad cores,

Now AMDS quad cores will be less expesenvive than core 2 duos i5 intel, So people are going to buy more amd just cause of the fact that it has 4 CORE AND NOT 2 USELESS FOR BIGGER PRICE. so amd is going to own intel.

Amd is not planning on realeasing a processor duo on par(Instead they are going to cease production of amd x2) It will realease quad cores and possibly six cores to compete against i9 so whats to feel sorry about?.

Well Intel did pay the price of backing AMD in a corner in Korea & Europe by going to the major Pc makers and making deals that they couldnt pass up leaving AMD in the dark not allowing them to sell their stuff. Intel had to pay two big fines in those two areas besuase they were accused of monpolying the market and were found guilty. Because of that Intel' image was kinda tarnished over in those areas. Its pretty bad in germany where one of AMD factorys are and the town/city beside it doesnt sell not one AMD cpu product besause how Intel flooded the market with those deals they made with Pc makers. But lately AMD has been on the role and their Phenom 2's are nearing I7 performance(without overclocking, all stock speeds) in gaming and some programs, And even the i5's wont out do AMD because they will be in the same performance bracket. Also on another note AMD and Intel are in some sort of agreement made back in 2001 or so allowing both to use each others mainstream advancements, a few months ago (Not to sure as of late) AMD was going to back out of the contract because of monopoly game Intel was playing earlier, but if they did Intel would not be able to use AMD's hypertransport tech on their new cpu's namely the i7's unless thery payed AMD to use it. Its nice see AMD cpu's in prebuilts now in stores, vs a year+ ago. So AMD with ATI are doing great overall, sticking it to the man.. o I mean Intel :P

I feel AMD is still doing fine because they can provide great affordable processors that are still good to people who can't afford to spend alot on the i7.

I think AMD offers a competative business model in comparison to Intel. I know some people swear by AMD but I really think they are quality inexpensive processors. It is hard to go wrong with an AMD, and you save quite a bit of money sometimes. I just happen to prefer intel is all. Besides, AMD and Intel go back and forth quite a bit. Years ago, AMD was the place to be.

AMD need to get their names out there more, I've seen Intel commercials and you see their branding all over the place especially on PC's as stickers or adverts in games, adverts in store windows. The only thing I've seen lately by AMD is a lot of mobile computing, I often see many laptops with AMD branding but it's never as extravagant, ATi are getting more press everyday, yes AMD own them but ATi are getting a lot of credit lately. It's also true AMD has caught up in the 45nm dual-core/quad-core scene but Intel just released their i7 line not too long ago and soon i5, i3 and just lately on the roadmap i9 !

You do know intel stole most of AMD's research right? And there is a huge lawsuit going on of AMD suing intel for it. Intel did nothing right, they just stole and took al lthe credit.

I got my HT link speed up to 2700MHz! Hooray! Beats the I7. I7 has a QPI link of 2400MHz reference, I think.
