Ok, so after being completely fed up with listening to other people call everyone else a noob, I've decided to try and find out why people do this. Do you call people noobs? If so, why? Does it really make you feel better by calling names? I personally think it's one of the most immature and nerdy things you can do when playing with other people, yet a lot of people seem to feel better about themselves by belittling others. Am I the only one fed up with hearing this?

no, i'd rather help them. if everybody plays better you start to in order to keep up, which i think makes it a lot more entertaining and fun.

much more fun to have lots of equally mathced players trying their hardest. what i don't like is those with too much time and have gotten too good, but i don't call them out either (they'll probs kill me :P )

You are mistaking a Noob with a Newb.

A newb is someone new to the game or bad at the game, they should be helped.

A noob is just an ignorant and arrogant player, normally they aren't very good either, but that is just a coincidence.

I've never said or written the word before, im probably someone who would be called a noob because I suck online and am not the greatest offline (can't beat most games above normal difficulty).

With that said, I've been playing games since before a lot of people on here were born, so im not a newb (I did beat crysis on delta, but the cloak really helps, almost cheating to me)

No, I hate insults, over the Internet or in real life. I usually try to help the novices, because I know how they feel, since I and everyone else used to be a 'noob' at a certain point. And I hate players that act like as if they were born experience gamers, and start insulting people with less skill.

I think you guys have "n00b" and "newb" mixed up. :?

To answer the question, yes if someone is being arrogant and unkind and generally being a "n00b," I probably wouldn't hesitate to point it out.

Wrong, Newbie and Newb are the same thing as one another and Noob and N00b are the same as each other. But they are two different things.

No, absolutely not - not of individuals, that is. But if my entire team is doing poorly in Team Fortress 2, I may chide them as well as encourage better play by suggesting what they should be doing.

I hate that word so much, generally if somebody is being really dumb I just call them a **** Douche-bag. Noob has got to be the most annoying word on the planet, as its thrown around for no reason all the time.

Are you guys seriously arguing over the appropriate time to use variations of the word noob? The point of this poll was to find out how many other people are sick of hearing the thrown around, and find out why people use it. I'll admit I used to call people names when playing online when I was like 15 or 16, but it never really brought any sort of satisfaction or relief to my anger. The only real way I've found to feel better about being pissed at someone in an online game is to do better than them, but it seems a lot of people are content with namecalling and arguing for sometimes the entire match with someone over the most stupid **** And it's really hard to have any respect for someone who spits out "stfu noob!" or other childish insults.

i use it when we play LAN games at my work during lunch. mind you, the people i deal with have good senses of humor. we chide each other and laugh at our mockeries.

1337 speak is funny, it's been around for ages and i've come to realize that most of the time, when people use those terms, they're simply trying to be funny and have a good time. what makes it even funnier are when people take it seriously and start reacting poorly in the game.

That and it makes the person saying it seem like an extremely nerdy little b^tch, who would only type it on the screen, rather than get ktfo for saying it to my face. I also hate the word pwnage (whatever the f*** it means). When i play a game online i'm to busy playing it rather than reading what 2 jackasses are ****hing and complaining about, typing text during a game also disrupts my gameplay, so i prefer voice-chat, only if it's proper gamewise like telling me where the enemy is, or that they need help here or there etc.

Ok, I'll admit I do use noob when joking around with my friends or bro, but that's only in a joking manner. I'm talking about specifically using it as an insult out of anger, which I don't think is ever taken jokingly, unless the person is trying to piss the person off more by laughing at their insult.

I find people who call other people n00bs are generally n00bs themselves. I mean like spamming the chatbox with "you f**king n00b", that's just... bad.

Of course the best bit is that one of the best players on our UT99 server actually has the nickname 'n00b' XD

It doesnt make any sense to me when anyone call someone else a noob. Everyone at one time was new at playing WoW or any other game. How does it help someone who is new playing a game to yell at his face calling him a noob then walk away? How does that solve anything?

Bottom line the people act this way is immature or elite minded jerks.

this thread is pointless. Most people who posted don't understand what a noob truely is and there is no reason to poll the uneducated.

Newb/newbie - To be new at a game, or just not understand how things work.

n00b/noob - an ignorant player who plays the game in a way similar to a person who doesn't know how. Teamkilling, or just being an idiot. They get off to the sight of people getting mad.

People are saying "noobs should be taught how to play the game". However they(noobs) usually already know, and act that way to annoy others. Teaching them how to play doesn't solve the problem.

This is a perfect example of what i've said about people not understanding enough about this topic to have an accual discussion

Noobs as i have stated are obnoxious and annoying for the sake of doing so.
Newbs are people who are new and don't understand.

I can say this, i have never been mean to a new player online, i think i have helped a few. With that said when i play Starcraft i keep them as far away from me as possible, when i make a game i always name it 1v1 "map" Nonewbs or 3v3 "map" Nonewbs, and if players with low stats still come in i will kick them instantly no questions asked. Not doing so will get me either a really poor game or a sure loss cuz one of my team mates doesnt know how to play properly.

Today i had an enounter with noob of the worst kind, i was playing with a friend and 2 of his buddies 2:2 on starcraft. We played the 1st game and won pretty easily but then on the 2nd game something really obnoxious and distateful happened, i came out of my base with all my units and both players were outside waiting so i moved back to my base while getting hit, my team mate attacked one of the other players while i stoped the attack and the minute i stop the attack one of the players said i was maphacking, my instant reaction was WTF is this guy smoking? there was absolutely no base for such acusation but he still kept saying it. I let it all out, i spared no bad words to describe his "noobness", not only i have never ever ever hacked it was a game between friends why the hell would i do such a thing ¬¬(i didnt knew the guy and vice versa) but we both knew the other 2 players. It was totally ridiculous and i hate sore losers, i dont have to put up with that crap ¬¬.

Look out everyone, there's a 1337 speaker amongst us.

For being so educated and high up, you've seemed to overlook to the point of this poll which was to see what people thought about calling other people noobs, not to define the technical meanings behind the different spellings. Seriously, accomplish something to pride yourself on other than cyberslang elitism.

No, I'm not the best video gamer in the world, and never will be. I try to enjoy the game, even ones I'm awful at. I don't care about being called one, and I don't call others it either.
