Hi, I have an outdated GPU and CPU right now and I would like to upgrade it. But I cannot buy both GPU and CPU right now, I must chose one . So what part is more important for performance and gaming. Please help me to chose which I should buy first. Right now my CPU : Intel Pentium 4 3.06 GHz. GPU : Radeon X1600 Pro 512 mb. Which one MUST be upgraded first? THANKS!!

you would probably have to upgrade your mobo to upgrade your processor. And your processor would probably bottleneck any new GPU.

Generally, a new GPU will give a larger performance boost, but since your processor is so bad, you basically have no choice but to upgrade it first.

I say CPU, its in dire need of an upgrade. Also graphics cards go down in price more fequently, so you can pick a graphics card later.

CPU, because it will help you with all other apps, but for gaming, you would need to upgrade both.

Get a E2180 for $80 and overclock it to the low 3ghz mark or high 2s. With the rest of your money, get a new card

CPU first! You'll probably have to upgrade your mobo along with it. I had to go from a P4 to a intel dual core E7200. It is fantastic!!! runs great and i overclocked to 3.2 with ease. I don't even know that much about overclocking either. I got the gigabyte GA P31 s3g motherboard along with it. I max crysis with great frames, cod4 91 frames, company of heroes 70 frames. It is fantastic. The mobo is only $65 and the cpu is only $130. Great deal, i really reccomend it for how cheap it is and how well it works with my gaming machine that cost $600.

Read some of his later posts and you will see that he already has a good mobo.

What's your price range? Because one of us might be able to find you a good deal for a decent upgrade on both.

get a E7200(cpu) and a ATI 4850 (gpu) and your set for under $350 and will be able to max any game!(in a normal res)

If you get a 45 nm cpu don't forget to update your motherboard's bios to version 2704.

I'd say your CPU since a card with 512mb of RAM can't be too bad. Go for the new E0 stepping (I think it's the E8600 or something like that).

Thanks for your help guys and I will go with the CPU first. I am thinking to upgrade to a Quad core which is Q6600. Do you guys think it's a good CPU for games and performance? I found the best deal here : http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2643933&Sku=CP2-DUO-Q6600 This CPU runs @ 2.40 GHz. Please give your opinions, THANKS!!

If you buy an OEM CPU, remember to buy a heatsink since it won't come with one. The Q6600 is a great processor, but Intel is cutting its price on July 20th. You might want to wait until then.

Thanks, do you have any other suggestions on CPU's? Or I should go with Q6600? Thanks.

You don't need to upgrade your CPU first. Yes, the Pentium 4s sucked, but the ones rated above 3.0GHz are still somewhat decent. If you upgrade your CPU, you'll be getting a rather small performance boost in gaming applicatons. However, if you go for a HD 4850 instead of that Q6600, you'll see a massive increase in framerates. Is it a good idea to upgrade both? Sure, but your processor can wait.

The CPU isn't really off putting your preformance too much. It's more or less the age of rig. I wouldn't expect much unless you upgrade the GPU.

But the HD 4850 needs atleast a duo processor and I have a pentium 4 @ 3.06 GHz, Do you think that card will work on my CPU?

well it can take the 1066fsb cpus but not the 45nm ones, so the q6600 is about as good as it will get. note there are 65nm such as the e6750 that wont work as they are 1333 fsb.

you might like to get a new cpu before all the new ones are 1333mzh fsb. how much to you have to spend?

The q6600 is probably the best cpu you can get so for one final upgrade should be good. there is also the e7200 which should work or the e6450 anything newer has the higher fsb so wont work

basicly no game can use more than 1.5-2 cores so if youe just gaming you could save a bit and get the e7200 which is pleanty fast for new games
