So, after a discussion with some people in a thread, I wanted to know the reason a PC Gamer will buy a game. I mean, the game must be obviously fun, but in my case, if a PC game does not include Multiplayer, it must be a real Monster in Single Player (I'm still hesitating about getting Dragon Age: Origins). Once you've completed the Single Player, I like when the game does not stop here. So the multiplayer is pretty much a "Must" in my criterias.

You can only vote for one, but you can list some and name some games as examples. These votes are the most common reason that someone will buy a game I think.

How good the game overall is. Gameplay is very important for me. Then after that there is story. And after that you have graphics.

I didn't vote, the primary reason I buy a game is for great gameplay, but not necessarily for single player content.

depends. gameplay is the key in any case, no matter what genre the game is.

RPGs and FPSs for story, but then again, in multiplayers story obviously doesn't matter at all.

e: actually, RPG is the only genre where i care about the story. for a good story and characters i go see a movie : ]

RPG - story, characters

Shooter - multiplayer (good singleplayer is a plus)

Graphics come last, but good graphics are always a plus.

The multiplayer (unless its a game like Half-Life). I will buy a game for its Multiplayer if I heard great things about it (lead me into buying Team Fortress 2) or if I enjoyed the game's past game's in its series (liked Battlefield 2's MP, bought Bad Company 2).

Have to say 2 and then 1. I'm a RPG/FPS person and a great story with characters would be wasted without great gameplay and SP experience. I could care less about MP and graphics while nice disapear into the backround with an emersive game. Deus EX is a prime example of great game over graphics. So I would combine 1 and 2 if I could for why I buy games.:)

online multiplayer

i will RARELY buy a single player game as i just find them to be a bore these days

they havent changed much since back in the day

i used to be an rpg fan, but now i just find them to be shallow and boring..the genre has gone nowhere in years..

and frankly the stories are terrible.....i hate this japanese craze and cant wait until it dies

1 : Artwork / Graphics is my primary priority unless the game offers gameplay / story so immersive i can overlook the graphics , think CastleVania : SOTN and FF 9 lol .

2 : Gameplay - if a rpg still uses the old school turned based forumla , it will never get my money XD .

3: Overall plot / presentation

I am a very multiplayer oriented gamer. I will by a game occasionally for a sudden urge for story, but i'll always get bored of it because of some gameplay element that really irks me... Dragon age, mass effect, fallout 3, valkyria chronicles. Its so frustrating because I really want to play som rpg's with story but once i get the big name ones, something just turns me away. Fallout 3, it was the completely dull and barren landscapes. Dragon age, i dunno, i kinda want to continue but i kinda dont. Mass effect, the gameply just bored the hell out of me but the story itself is decent ( i love mass effects presentation though, it really is amazing, but the gameplay turned me off).

in the end, the only games i guess i will keep on playing are multiplayer games... and nba XP, which i never play online.

I think single-player is a thing of the past, I only play the online portion of games (single-player has no appeal for me). But I don't mind campaigns if they can be played with friends through online co-op or something.

What? We single-players are alive and well, thank you very much. Multiplayer is mindless fun, and that is ultimately BORING. I like to think, explore in my own pace, take my time, immerse myself in the game's world.

With all due respect, multiplayer plainly sucks. 8)

EDIT: and based on the votes, I'm not the only one who thinks that. :)

I had to go with gameplay and experience. I love a good story, and a good one can save a bad game, but I'll buy a game just because it's fun. But I usually don't buy a game if it has a good story. Although the great plots are worth any gameplay experience.

Depends on the genre for me. If it's some sort of arcadey game like Beat Hazard, then just pure fun/enjoyability will sell the game for me. If it's an RPG I demand intelligence. In everything. Nothing can be superficial, world continuity is a must, and I really strongly believe that true choice shouldn't be presented in a "Be good" or "Be bad" GUI context choice. True choice: a) not bi-polar, which is an incredibly naive way of giving 'choice' (looking at you Bioware) and b) being able to make your physical actions speak louder than your words. Want to kill someone in modern RPG's? You get a context menu or a set-piece battle. How it should be done? Deus Ex, basically. I also like good writing but it hasn't progressed anywhere near enough in this medium to get all snooty about writing. For FPS I like compelling stories presented in a unique manner; I'm not a huge fan of holding down W and Mouse 1 for a few hours. Combat that takes preparation and though to execute properly is grand as well (i.e. stalker). FPS multi-player usually has to have some sort of teamwork involved for it to interest me, unless it is Quake. I love Quake. I will admit that I mainly play RTS games for the multiplayer, probably because I'm a very competitive person. Although I do think Starcraft's story is the best thing Blizzard have ever done. I also appreciate original art styles a laaaarge amount, but am not that bothered about technical graphics. One of my favourite games ever is Dwarf Fortress and that basically looks like a spreadsheet in MS-DOS. This makes me sound quite picky but I'm really open minded. I'll give something a chance to surprise me before commenting on it.

The topic here is not: Why do you like a game and what do you hate about a game? The topic is about what is the Main reason someone will buy a PC game. And so far, I'm pretty surprise because I thought there were more people that were buying games for the graphics (think of Crysis :P). I mean, many PC gamers want the lattest graphic card or the most powerful one! And well, I like a game where multiplayer is supported because once you've completed the Single Player, your game does not stop here. You still can have fun and show your skills.

I know it would have been cool to vote for 2 aspects, but keep listing them! And you can give games as examples!

Yes, but I wouldn't buy a multiplayer-only because I can't stand them; so a good single-player campaign is one of my reasons.

There are games that you can keep playing after finishing the main quest, like Fallout 2 and 3, Oblivion and Morrowind... and with a fully active modder community in these last three.

I'm not sure if you can keep playing in Call of Pripyat after the main quest... that would be nice indeed.

For me excelent single player gameplay is first and formost. Graphics andexecution are next. I'm not into multiplayer mainly because broadband connections are quite poor where I'm from and I can't afford the higher speeds that are avaialble. Also, I'd rather play with people I know personally than with people I just met on the internet.

i think exactly the opposite : ]

if the game is meant to be multiplayer, what's the point of wasting resources to make some crappy singleplayer campaign? think of Battlefield 2 or Left 4 Dead 2 (yeah well it has bots if you wan't to play alone, but it's 100% the same stuff)

then there are other shooters i buy for singleplayer only. think of Stalker. developers rarely have the time or resources to excel on both areas at the same time.

Call Of Duty series (since the beginning) has done pretty good job delivering a little something for everyone.

I judge all factors of a game very carefully, but one that I hold above all others is, can I play said game with my friends online or in a lan cooperatively?

I don't like the way the poll is set up. I sometimes buy games for single player, other times for multiplayer. For example, I bought Mass Effect 2 for single player, Bad Company 2 for multiplayer, and Bioshock 2 for Single Player. No option for 'one or the other'. IMO, there really aren't any games where the single player and multi player are equally good.

Since I am mainly an RPG fan, I'd say story and character and a little graphics. The game needs to look better than let's say KoTOR I. :)

The first two choices in the poll, but one other reason would be the developer who coded the game.

The poll is a little biased, wouldn't you say? Depending on the genre of the game we're talking about, we will place more importance in certain elements. An RPG definitely requires a solid story and single-player experience, while an FPS is more heavily focused on the gameplay experience, usually simplifying a complex plot down to something along the lines of: "You are marine. Cool dude. Kill koreans. Bad guys."

I like singleplayer experience/gameplay first followed by graphics. I like flight sims a lot. I currently have the following installed:

Flight Simulator X

X-Plane 9

DCS: Blackshark

Of the three, DCS: Blackshark was the latest but not necessarily the best in eye candy. When it comes to fidelity to the real thing (which falls under gameplay), it comes closest.

Gameplay and SP ofcourse

I don't care about MP. The type of game I'm playing takes at least days to finish (like Civilization)... a lot of the games doesn't even have an enemy AI (like RollerCoaster Tycoon)

I prefer to build up my own story over the time of the game. If an RPG game had a dynamic world, where I'm the one building the story, that would be great (of course it should also be non-fantasy). Some times I do play adventure games, but even there story is not important

For FPS games graphics is a bit important, but that's because most of the times (rarely) when I play FPS, I play them to see how advanced graphics is getting. I'm not much into FPS. But currently I'm playing old games, so graphics is not even close to being important in other types of games

I know the poll could have been deeper, but I had to put 5 answers only. And well, yes it depends of the genre. But to be honest, some people don't care about stories and they will buy a RPG for it's gameplay only. Others could love RPG for it's story, but won't care if there's no multiplayer. Some people will like RPGs but online, so they'll head for MMORPGs. I know that is for the same genre, but, for me, if a game doesn't support multiplayer or Lan, I probably won't buy it unless it's epic in single player. Thats why my favorite genres are FPS, RTS, and MMORPGs.

It's with this idea in mind that I made the poll. Sorry if it's not perfect :(
