The original post asked what genres you generally avoid. As several posters have pointed out, the question should be what THEMES you tend to avoid. My apologies on the confusion, and thanks to all those posters that win the Hermione award for pointing out my error. You are annoyingly correct. Or I am annoyingly wrong. I prefer to think you as annoyingly correct. :P

Whenever I encounter a Western or World War game I completely lose interest. Which of the most popular genres/themes of games interest you the least?

I may have missed some obvious ones, so please feel free to post. This poll was inspired by another user who cannot stand sci-fi games . I don't think that Rhythm games (think Dance, Dance Revolution) or puzzle games warranted their own genre, but feel free to contest me.

Happy gaming!

I tend to avoid all of the strange hardcore turn-based wargames. They are often set in a war that nobody has ever heard of, and they try so hard to be realistic that they lose a lot of their fun. Also, I don't think i've ever seen one with at least semi-acceptable graphics. They all seem to be stuck in 1990. I'm of course generalizing quite a bit, but that's only because I really just do not enjoy that genre. Leave it to the Grognards.

There are two particular ones that I can't get use to: Flight Simulators or Space Wars strategies. I'm only staying away from them because I'm pretty bad playing them.

Everything else I don't have issue with.

You didn't post a single genre :P I don't particuarly like scifi or ancient, theme wise. Genre wise, I really don't like RTSs. Too much thinking :D

The choices in the poll are just the setting, even a lousy setting can make for a good game imo (I would have liked to back that up with an example but one fails to come to mind..).

Genres I steer clear off are mmorpg's (never tried them and doubt I will in the near future), tycoon type games and lately rts type games. I have to add that I actually like rts type games but I know from experience that I don't have/take the time to get into them (I have yet to try out my barbarian invasion expansion pack for example).

What is the question again? You ask what genre we like the least, but the poll is about themes..! For me it's impossible to vote in the poll, as you have mixed the worst theme into the same option as the "best" theme (well, best of the themes mentioned). The worst theme is without doubt the fantasy theme (I don't see what's fun about a fireball throwing elf) The next is recent historical war theme (WW2 to be exact... ) Ancient themes are often not that interesting, but at least that theme does have some good games (the above two themes doesn't) Most of the games I like takes place in present day or the future And whenever a good western games comes out, I'll keep an eye on it (we have too few of those around)

Anything that involves magic or elves or any crap like that!  I hate fantasy games and hate most RPG.  Oblivion and KOTOR are the only exceptions to that rule.

I don't like games that have a medieval (etc) setting, unless it's a fantasy medieval one :)

WW2 games, I can't stand them, I've avoided them since MOHAA and BF1942. Also the old-fashioned fantasy theme with elves and stuff has started to annoy me lately, scifi still attracts me tho.

I don't like WWII because I think shooter games are supposed to be fun, and it hard for me to have fun if I have to play in a historical setting, being convinced that I actually have to kill these guys in a real war, which actually happened.

It depends on the genre. For FPS, any war from WWI to the future is fine. For RPG, anything but reality or history. For strategy,  I avoid WWI-II like the plague, unless the game is really unique or awesome (CoH).

none, actually - there're settings i prefer, and settings i don't particularly love - but i'd never avoid a great game because of the setting, ever

of the ones mentioned, though, i particularly love all of them - but most scifi and fantasy are both usually pretty generic and barely worth considering compared with the best stuff out there, elitist it may be, but with good reason

I voted Others. I try to avoid games far away in the future (not Star Wars games =P) like BF2142 (BF 2 is better) or Sup. Com's.

I avoid sports and flight sims really, but out of the types listed, my least favourite is games of ancient times, I dont dislike games set during the period, just my least favourite, with sci-fi and WW2 being my favourite.

Lately I've been having trouble doing Adventure games.  A lot of people knock it, but I used to be a huge fan of the genre.  Ever since the decline in the genre's popularity and the small number of good games though, I've played RPG's, RTS', and FPS' to the point where I grow impatient with the steady and slow pacing.

Maybe not really a genre in itself, but I've never understood or gotten into Japanese RPG's, or Japanese games in general. Sure, there are a few great exceptions, but all in all, I find them to be very lacking...

Out of the selection historical, i dont mind some current stuff, but just cant get into early 19xx's based games. Although CoH was interesting, just crashed way too much.

Aside from that, sims, sports, puzzles, & some too hardcore strategies. But puzzles in action/adventure/etc games can turn out interesting.

I don't avoid any of those. A good game is a good game.

The only games that I'd never play are sports games, unless it's with friends, then it's ok.

One genre that I'm getting pretty tired of is WWII, I mean come on, every other game is a WWII game.Â
