[QUOTE="ferret-gamer"][QUOTE="Blistrax"] Yes, really. You seem to be easily mystified, so I'll try to help you understand. The trailers had top-notch graphics---like a Pixar cartoon. When a company bait-and-switches me like that, I resent it so much I won't let them have any of my money. If we all did that, PC game graphics would improve.Blistrax
They looked like Pixar graphics because they were 3d renders. Nearly all game developers do this, if you only play games that always made their trailers in-engine and in-game graphics then you play very few games. It was extremely obvious as well, anyone who has been playing games for a while could easily tell those weren't real time graphics. At least the portal 2 trailers actually resembled the game graphics for the most part, something you cant say for most trailers you see for games. You are resenting them because you took a trailer meant for entertainment as a display of gameplay graphics instead of, you know, looking at gameplay videos or screenshots.
And not only that, Portal 2 is still a very nice looking game, sure it isn't heavily modded Crysis, but the game still looks great, the attention to detail is outstanding.
Everybody talks "modded Crysis". What are they talking about? You don't have to mod Crysis. You are suggesting that amateur fiddlings with settings they have no clue about will improve PC games, and that's what makes them better than consoles? Wrong. The speed and complexity of the hardware does that, if the game programmers would only write for it. My PC can do real-time renders as good as the ones in the Portal trailers---that's what a monster graphics card is for. As long as PC gamers remain uncritical, ill-informed, obedient little consumers, the game companies will keep feeding us feces and telling us it's ice cream. I'm sick and tired of being taken for an idiot. You have some extremely odd thought processes.
1. I used modded crysis as an example of something that is highly advanced graphically as opposed to portal 2. I am going to ignore your highly ignorant comment about modders since this part of the discussion is irrelevant to what we were earlier talking about.
2. Your PC can't render something comparable to Portal 2's trailers in real time. Even suggesting that signifies you don't know what you are talking about. Even using something like a CUDA render like Octane your GTX 295 is much much too weak to render something like the Portal 2 trailers in real time, escpecially at a high res.
Portal 2 was never about the graphics in the first place, not every dev wants to or has the resources to create a new technilogical masterpiece, portal 2 runs on a heavily modified engine from 2003, everyone knows that. There were many many videos circulation for a long time of the gameplay graphics. Your choosing to boycott an amazing game because Valve create a few trailers for entertainment that arent in-game is just plain sad.
