Stay away from Generals...all you do is build a army and throw it at your enemy. For good RTS requiring tactics play Warcraft 3 and Rise of Nations. Turn based Civ 3 and 4 are good strategy games as well. If you have time for an RPG I highly recommend Baldurs Gate 2.
