I know several Star Trek references have been found in Mass Effect 2, but I think there may be another one.

When EDI gives her joke about humans crawling on their knees, just before that Joker says, "This is all Joker's fault. What a tool he was. I have to spend all day computing pi because he plugged in the Overlord."

I was wondering what pi had to do with a computer, but then I remembered the Star Trek episode, Wolf in the Fold, where they tell the computer to find the last digit of pi in order to distract it long enough for them to shut it down.

Is it possible that this is a Star Trek reference or some other reference or just a fake sci-fi joke that we aren't supposed to understand.

I'm guessing it would be a Star Trek reference although I know nothing much about Star Trek (apart from the awesome movie ^^) but knowing Bioware, they would definitely make it obvious for sci fi fans then, since they really do make a lot of reference to a lot of sci fi movies.

I think it's just a mathematical thing. Pi is an irrational number, and has infinitely many digits. There are and have been entire research projects dedicated to calculating pi to as many decimal places as possible. Wiki it, they say it's already been calculated to a trillion decimal places, but you only need like 12 or so to be accurate enough to apply it to real world applications. So, finding further decimal places to pi is something only pure mathematicians, or a future AI, would be interested in.

Truthfully, I didn't think twice about the joke, but I majored in mathematics and am starting grad school for mathematics, pure track, this fall.

It wouldn't surprise me. There are several references to Warhammer 40,000 in the game (such as Dakka), and even oblique references to Babylon 5 and various other sci-fi settings.

If that was true I wouldn't play it, can't stand star trek. I can barely tolerate the similarities as it is...

Then why does Mass Effect do it? In every aspect...from some of the species, to the galactic government itself. Star Trek is one of the most influential and iconic Sci-Fi series, and movies for that matter. You have no right to say that.

Well kinda like that. To be honest the whole scheme/theme is a star trek ripoff but with cool looking suits and guns.
