So, my mate has an xbox 360 controller and his wondering how to use it on pc. I told him he needs a windows xbox 360 controller but he seems to think a standard wired 360 controller can work.

Is this possible or does he need a windows 360 controller?

A wired 360 controller will work perfectly. The drivers are available for download from Microsoft's homepage.

From my experience, if youre running Vista or 7 you dont even need to download anything. Just plug it in and it automatically starts working and even changes some games to use Xbox buttons.

Thanks for the info guys. I told him to get the drivers from here: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/p/xbox-360-controller-for-windows/C8G-00004#support

But he apparently gets an error halfway through installing. Its says something along the lines of: a problem has occured, the file may be currupted.

He tried redownloading them but has had no luck. He is using xp pro 32bit.

Any ideas?

Make sure he's running at least Service Pack 2 (the drivers will not work with SP1 or earlier). The direct link to the correct file is:

Thanks again for the help so far guys. I personally use a windows 360 controller on my windows 7 32bit machine fine without any problems. Could the problem be that he doesn't have a windows one and just a standard 360 controller?

Oh and yes, he did download windows xp 32bit drivers.

And yeah, he has service pack 3 atm.

hoosin91

No.

The only difference between a standard controller and a "Windows" one, is that the Windows wireless controller comes with a wireless adapter. The controllers are the identical, whether wireless or wired.

Yeah, the problem is definately not the controller itself. They are all identical. I interchange between my 360 and PC all the time.

hmm ok, must just be something weird with his configuration or something that is stopping the drivers from installing.
