Yes i know this is probably a dumb question, yes i expect you allto attack me with insults lol:

I'm a console gamer moving onto pc games end of year and i was wondering if pc has it's own achievement system running? if so could you explain/link me?

I've heard - although i'm sure its just rumours - that you can implement your xbl gamertag onto pc and get achievements playing pc versions of games? as i said, i'm sure it's jsut rumours but y'know, it's worth asking.

Thanks guys,

Jared

Yes, most "Games for Windows" tagged games support achievements and can be linked to your XBL gamertag. Also, Steam has their own achievment system that is pretty similiar to XBL.

I'm sure your talking about games for live.

Anyway some Steam games have achievments, otherwise no.

The problem is that the PC achievement systems aren't universal and because of that, they are a complete waste.

Steam is a Digital Download service among other things that it is. The best way to fully find out what Steam is to go to the main site and read up on it. http://store.steampowered.com/

Its all well and good if you dont mind not owning the physical copy of the game and its box. I prefer owning the box and physical copy so I only use Steam for impossible to find games or games that never made it to retail stores.

IMHO, achievements are a waste of time implementing. They should be putting their time towards more content for the game instead of "content".

Huh? how did you reach that conclusion? Steam is a distribution platform you buy games through it and yes it also has support for some mods, that can be downloaded through it, but no you can't use it without owning at least one game that allows you to play the mod.

Try Diablo II Lord Of Destruction. It has more ultrarare items to achieve than all the achievements, unlocks and trophys you can get in all the console games combined. Damm, you can burn ten years playing the game and never find yourself a Tyrael Might armor or obtain the runes to made a Lat Wish rune word.

Well, if you were a member of the SomeThingAwful forums, they have a system setup there so that people in other countries besides the US, can get games for US prices.

For example, say you wanted a game that costs you $70-80 USD, well you would PayPal the US cost of the game to one of the member's in the thread they have all about this and that person would GIFT you the game. By gifting you the game, your getting the US version and NOT the AU version and you spend LESS in USD because the game may save you $10 or so.

Oh course, you have to spend $10 to become a member of SomeThingAwful, but it's worth it IMO. They can also Gift you games that aren't available in Australia as well.

Huh? how did you reach that conclusion? Steam is a distribution platform you buy games through it and yes it also has support for some mods, that can be downloaded through it, but no you can't use it without owning at least one game that allows you to play the mod.DanielDust

On Steam, Australians and Europeans pay more for games.

Isn't there some thing with console games that if you unlock certain achievements you earn points for downloadable games? If that is the case then I agree that they are a waste of time on the PC.

You can use Visa and Mastercard, which are universal credit/debit cards used around the world.

If, like me, you don't have either of those, you can use PayPal.

Only a few games support Live achievements - Gears, GTA4, Fallout 3, DoW2, newer Capcom stuff and some others. You can find the list in wikipedia. The game has to be marked "Games For Windows LIVE", not just "Games For Windows". You can use the same gamertag and account as in XBL. Steam has its own achievement system that all newer games from Valve use, as well some others. You don't have to buy the games through Steam to take advantage of it. There is no unified system atm, Xfire will work with all games tracking your hours and has some neat features but that's about it.

There is Games for windows LIVE.. but there is only about 20 games that use it. Steam seems to have most games on there service with achievements and the like.
