I spent months playing this online and offline, its a 3d PC remake of the classic game Scorched Earth
http://www.scorched3d.co.uk/
Its a little slow paced though, and if you don't have the patience for it, Worms 3D is a bit faster paced and less waiting inbetween turns. Worms isn't free however.
Well, if you have BF1942 you can get some really excellent mods that could be conisdered full games:
1. Derset Combat
2. Forgotten Hope
3. Galactic Conquest
4. Battlefield: 1918
As well at some great mods for UT2004, can't list all of them, but here are some of my favirotes:
1. TO- Crossfire
2. Red Orchestra
3. Strike Force
4. UnWheel
I'll spare you my huge list of games. ;) Here is the top 15 freeware titles:
1) Starsiege: Tribes (A fantastic shooter, which still to the day is a fun, playable online fragfest. Grab some bots and go offline, too)
2) Ground Control (A squad based RTS that looks nice and plays like a dream, not too complex but with the right amount of depth)
3) Freespace 2 (Techincally not freeware, but fun all the same, a fantastic space sim with great combat and big, big ships)
4) Nexuiz or OpenArena or Alien Arena 2007 (All deathmatch shooters, and all super fun)
5) Return to Castle Wolfenstien: Enemy Territory (An objective based shooter with amazing production values, grab bots)
6) Anacreon (A 4X strategy game without all the fills, and under a megabyte)
7) The Ur-Quan Masters (A huge space opera shooter RPG action whatchamacallit)
8 ) Tremelous (An RTS FPS hybrid, strictly online)
9) Nethack (A hard but still classic rouge RPG)

Nice post, always wanted to try the original Tribes, but never got to it.

Conquer Online, and it's sibling, Eudemons Online are ok; plenty to do and all, but there are plenty of cruel players on those games who just kill for the stuff you carry or because you did something they don't like. Not my type of game, sorry.
Give Dungeon Runners a try.

Not quite sure why you resurrected such an old thread, but the two obvious ones are Quake Live and Battlefield: Heroes (I'm not sure if I would call the latter good, I need to spend more time with it).
Zatikon. It is a pretty fun turn based strategy game and you can play with firends online. I guess you could kind of equate it to chess, it just has a lot more units and variability. But yeah, you can get it off Chronic logics website chroniclogic.com or Zatikon.com
