I did a search but it looks like most of the posts were a year or older.....looking into a decent unit without breaking the bank...Im not an avid online gamer....just a flight sim and thinking about COD4...I scored a new BFG GeForce 8600 GT OC ThermoIntelligence Video Card - 512MB GDDR3 off ebay rather cheap....under $150 and Im looking for choices on a PSU.

Well, you won't need more than a 450w, so you should be fine with anything really. I have an OCZ Gamexstream 600w, and I love it, it is the best psu I have ever had. If OCZ makes a 450w, I would suggest that.

theres a good chance you already have enough power to run a 8600gt open up your case and find how many amps(A) it has on the 12V+ you find this info on your powersupply sticker which should be at the upper left hand corner for example it will look like this

12V+

18A

if you end up not having enough which is around 17-18 then get this powersupply its great its very reliable and quite http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703011

My suggestion is this:

http://www.idealcomputing.co.uk/products.asp?partno=13713267 (sorry UK link)

Its an Antec Earthwatts 500W PSU I highly reccomend it as i use it myself, it should be easily enough to power your system.

Here ya go, much better quality than the Earthwatts for just a little more. Should demolish the Gamexstream as well.

First though, try to find out if your PC supports a standard ATX PSU.

Well ok, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but the 550VX has more 12v rail power(Earthwatts is a bit weak in that area), and if Jonnyguru is right(and he usually is right about these things) the 550VX is a bit more efficient and is better behaved ripple-wise. Both are better than the Gamexstream, which has out of spec ripple at high loads.

The Ultra series can be a bit of a hit and miss. Do your research with the model you're looking at with Ultras.

The PCP&C Silencer 610 should give you plenty of rock-solid power to spare for only 120 US$ sans shipping. And, judging from my personal experience, it seems to live up to the "Silencer" label. It's not modular, though, so you may want to seek out an alternative if you don't have extra room in your case to hide cables.

well being totally new to upgrading pc's I googled JonnyGURU and read the reviews on the Corsair PSU and I think I'm going with either the 450 or the 550....leaning towards the 550w. Both seem to be all out performers and will provide plenty of power for my application.....the 550 may be the better choice out of the 2 because I may upgrade more at another date but I know my PC has it's limits and may just stick with the 450w.

I believe the Corsair's are 450 (don't get it) 520, and mine the 620 watts. Get the 520 watt because you may want to upgrade your video card in the future. Look at tigerdirect.com,buy.com,zipzoomfly.com as well as newegg.com for the cheapest price.

The corsair HX series is WAY overpriced.Modular cabling is not that important. And i prefer PSU's with a single 12V rail.

Well actually if he is not an avid gamer then i would advice him the coolermaster 460W.It costs half the price of the corsair one.Dont get me wrong the corsair one is a very good PSU i have one but the need for a quality PSU is sometimes overrated IMO.

My friend is powering his 8800GT on that coolermaster.

I have a two part problem and would welcome any advice esp. from users with HP Pavilion a!600n

I have an HP Pavilion a1600n--power supply is nominally 300w, but I think actual is perhaps 280w. I disabled the 6150 LE integrated graphics card and installed a BFG nvidia 6600GT. Lot of problems since when trying to run not-very-demanding games such as Sid Meier's Railroads!--chief problem is flashing or off-color pixels all over the screen. A couple of games that I tried to run e.g. Settlers actually crashed the system. Could this be a power supply problem?

I just bought a Termaltake 500w Purepower 2.0 psu, but the Radio Shack guy said the HP connectors between the mob and the power supply are proprietory & he didn't think this psu would be compatible. PSU box says it has a 24-pin main power connector and an ATX 12v 4 pin connector. From the a1600n specs, it looks like the mob also has this configuration. As I haven't opened the psu box yet, can anyone give me a heads up on whether this new psu will replace my existing one.

Thanks,

Vermont Grandma

It does matter a fair amount - PSU manufacturers are free to say whatever they want about their PSU's, so if you're buying a complete no-name 650W, there's no guarantee you're getting something that will be able to actually do that kind of power. It also might be made by a cheap OEM and be consequently unreliable or dangerous to your other components. There's no guarantee it's a bad thing, you're just sort of rolling the dice. It's a good bet that it isn't good, though. What you're buying with name-brand power supplies is peace of mind that no matter what else is going on, your PSU should be good.

I was recommended this one(610 watt Silencer) from somebody on this forum, havn't built the rig yet, but it looks good.
