Well, I am going to be replacing my video card in my computer with a ATI Radeon HD 4670 (I know it isn't the most top of the line card but I am gaming on a reasonable budget). I have a HP Amd Phenom II Quad-core 2.6ghz computer and I have been told that HP computers usually need a new power supply to use a new video card because the ones they come with are weak. Will I need a new power supply for this card? If so how powerful?

Is there any way for me to figure this out without opening the computer? The futureshop website that I bought it off says "Information Not Available". Although the customer reviews seem to all mention the power supply being weak.

EDIT: Would a 450 watts power supply be good for the video card and such?

I'm curious as to why you wouldn't want to open up the computer to check your current psu but you're wanting to replace the video card which will require opening the case and most-likely, as you've been told, need a psu larger than the one in the case.

450? Hmm, I personally think you can't go by wattage alone, however; it does seem like you may need a more powerful power supply to keep your rig running smoothly and to remain stable.

I am quite aware that a video card requires opening it but I hate opening computers and this computer is new and I just don't want to open it until I need to. Especially because I am almost sure I will need a new power supply.

4670 cards are pretty low on requirements, it would probably run off of a 300-400watt.

You can run a HD5770 with a Corsair 400w PSU.

I'm probably going to get a BFG 450 Watts Pc Power Supply, that is the cheapiest one I can find that isn't a Dynex (which apparently aren't very well made).

I rather you get a hd 5670, than a Psu that will turn the inside of your rig into country-fried steak.

What does my video card have to do with my psu frying my computer? I have read some reviews of the power supply and I don't see any problems with it.

Hmm, that surprises me. I guess ATI is more power-efficient than Nvidia then. My GPU requires a 500w minimum, and my new one is going to require a 600w minimum.

My current power supply is 300w. I don't trust running my new card off of that so I will get that BFG 450 watts power supply.

Ewryone knows that. ;) The HD5770 use less power than the 8800gt does.
