Many games have bad endings, leaving the player disappointed, longing for something better.
I'd like to dedicate this thread to games that actually had good endings that were also very powerful, leaving you staring at the screen unable to find something to say about what you've just experienced.

Choose your game or games and tell us all about it!

My only request is that you keep a distance between the name of the game you choose and the description of its end, so that people don't accidentally read your spoilers. If only we could blacken the text here :

SPOILERS

My contribution would be Half-Life 2: Episode Two.

The success of disabling the Combine's super-portal made me think that this is it - a good and happy semi-ending towards Episode Three. And then it comes - two advisors break in, and kill off Eli Vance. I was shocked. I feel obligated to say that the actress who plays Alyx does an excellent job - it actually sounded sad and tragic. The very idea of killing off such an important character right before he tells you of all the secrets and questions you want answered makes for a confusing and powerfully emotional ending. Oh, and hearing Alyx crying as the credits roll - priceless. Excellent moment of immense virtual entertainment.

END OF SPOILERS.

For powerful I'd go with the original half life.

I agree with you, TC. Half-Life 2: Episode 2's ending was amazing in so many ways.

My favorite ending is mafia. I don't remeber episode 2's ending very well but I didn't care for episode 1 or the original half life 2 ending. Personally I like my endings to be endings and not an excuse to make a sequel.

I don't think it's fair to call the episodes sequels, they're the continuation of Half-Life 2, direct ones, that just come in doses so we don't have to wait six years for another sequel.

I agree with HL2 Ep2, best ending ever, rpg's really need to work on endings, in my opinion they shouldnt have one but thats just me. Gothic 3's multiple endings all sucked, Two world's multiple endings both sucked, Neverwinter Nights 2 sucked so bad near the end I couldnt make myself finish. Knights of the Old Republic is the one exception I see, both of its endings were pretty good.

Max Payne 2 ending. the hardest difficulty ending. It was simple, yet the closure was included perfectly.

That was just shocking, not emotionally moving. An extremely emotionally moving game ending has to be Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne.
Everybody Max ever cares about ends up dead.
I just beat NWN 2 Mask of the Betrayer last night and I like how the ending was really messed up because my character was pretty messed up. I didn't do evil things throughout the whole game but I guess I did enough of them to count for something.
My character fell in love with the Red Wizard woman and they were a powerful duo but since I Created the demon character, One Of Many, and left it alone, it got jealous and killed the Red Wizard woman. The spirit shaman Gann traveled with my character for a while and eventually got bored and left and the Celestial Kaelyn (sp) saw my character's feats and decided she could go against the Gods also. She rallied an army and watched as she led her brothers and sisters to death. she lost and eventually returned home where she never spoke again.
You either are completely heartless, or just unmoved by emotions in video games.

HL2:EP2 was the most emotional and well acted ending in any game I've ever played.

The Mafia ending is the best ending I have ever seen in a game.

EDIT: Hitman 2 has an awesome ending, too.

I'm amazed at how many are saying HL2EPI2, I thought it was pretty meh with Alyx's crying giving me more of a cheese-alert than compassion.

For me the definite winner in this category is Max Payne 2, it's just so.. perfect (IMHO of course). Mafia's ending was also very powerful, so it comes in second for me I suppose.

I absolutely loved HL2: Episode 2's ending, despite it being so damn depressing.

Dreamfall's was also brilliant:
Zoe's death was possibly the saddest moment in videogame history, imo.
Oh, and The Witcher:
The Grand Master was the only villain in any game that I can remember feeling bad about killing. I mean, hell, I raised that guy! :O
Also, while it wasn't particularly 'emotionally powerful', Sam and Max Season 2 had one of the most satisfying endings I can think of.

That has to be one of the best:

First Max Payne:
Max kills Nicole Horne and gets arrested, it was so satisfying...
And how could I forget Blizzard games, awesome...

If you guy's want one of the most emotional endings of all time try Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Even if it's not a PC game it makes the Halflife 2 Episode 2 ending look pale in comparison.

First Max Payne - he kills the woman who arranged for his wife and daughter to be killed and gets arrested feeling all relaxed and like a winner.

Second Max Payne - he kills Vladimir Lem who's also been a part of the plot to kill his family, but also finds out that the first woman he's loved since his wife, Mona Sax, has also died. On the highest difficulty, though, she lives.

You either are completely heartless, or just unmoved by emotions in video games.

It's cheesy because the game assumes that you love it and you love the story. I wasn't exactly "into" the story when I was playing it so I saw the ending and all that it left me thinking was ".........ooooooookay". Not only that but it was on the predictable side too.

It's probably an hour long cutscene. I kid. I wish, I could play the game but my PS3 isn't BC and it isn't available for PC.

Anyways, back on topic, most powerful endings for me:

Warcraft III

Mafia

HalfLife2: EP2

Halflife

Starcraft

Max Payne 2

Grim Fandango

Well if you're not into the story I suppose I can understand why you wouldn't be too moved by it, that's kinda how it get's to you. Regardless the voice acting was superb, and if you are into the story and characters, as I was, it was a very moving ending.

I think that's true of any game where you find yourself connected to the plotline. In this case I'm very fond of the plot, and HL2 and EP1 did a good job of making you grow fonder of the characters there.

I remember an old SNES RPG, Lufia II had a pretty powerful ending to it, though the storyline is pretty corny by the standards of today (and possibly back then?).

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

KOTORs' ending on its' own wasn't that good, but the whole end of the game was quite epic. Especially if you picked the dark side.
