Here I am just starting the 10th plus playthru of F.E.A.R. since it came out. I kid you not.....ten plus is how many times I have played this game since when it came out. As I finish the level where ALMA shows up right at the end and then you jump thru the window to get away from her flames. I'm thinking " Jeez! I've played every major fps of the last two years and nothing gives me the feeling of anticipation, excitement, adrenaline rush, like good ole F.E.A.R. Don't get me wrong the PC games industry is strong, and not counting FPS, every other genre has made strides in keeping things fresh, yet my fav of all just sucks! The FPS genre is just so sad right now. There's nothing that I can think of that even comes close to games like F.E.A.R. in the last few years. I'm going to say that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SHOC is right there with FEAR, but it's a hybrid of sorts. I'm talking straight up shooters like Prey, Doom, and of course, F.E.A.R. It is my sincerest hope that if there's one genre that makes a stong comeback in terms of epic, adrenaline rush, full of tension, great gunplay and a total focus on SINGLE PLAYER I hope it's the FPS genre. It's way overdue for a new title that blows us away like F.E.A.R. does even today. I'm turning up the 5.1 and heading back to meet up with Alma and Fattel. Outta here.......::)

For single player, the first Crysis was like that for me. Spent many hours attacking the same spots using different styles and screwing around with the physics. For better or worse this whole topic largely comes down to taste however. I'd argue that Counterstrike is still the best fps shooter :D

FEAR is a pretty good game, but TEN playthroughs? Sounds more like you have a preference for the game more than anything else.

i never liked the game. The environment all industrial and in the same building is a real turnoff, I like an adventure in my fps. The AI is simply amazing tho.

fear was good but i def. wouldnt play through it again too much of the game was centered around the creep factor and less about the players involvement. it was also a corridor shooter with mediocre AI. it was good for its day but its a far cry from what todays games offer. which is why fear 2 & 3 suck so much ---

I agree. I do love FEAR thought, and it does tight-corridor AI so well. Still have to get around to playing the third game.

I played through it 2 or 3 times, partly to see how it looked when I upgraded my computer over the years.

Its one of my favourite sraight FPS games ever.

It's not sad when you consider how well FEAR has aged. Sure, the graphics, in all their cuby glory, don't look as impressive as they did back then (though by no means bad), but the gameplay and pacing is still pretty amazing. The only problems are the relative lack of different enemies and some monotony in the environments, but other than that it's a bloody good game.

I disagree, however, that the FPS genre has not progressed. I don't see how Stalker wouldn't count 'as it's a hybrid'. It's as much as a straight-up shooter as FEAR is. The RPG elements are really light and the survival horror-like stuff doesn't really transcend the borders of the FPS genre. Other than Stalker, you also have the Crysis series (especially 1 & Warhead), the Arma series, BioShock 1 and 2 and Metro 2033 that prove that the genre hasn't stood still over the past few years. Quite on the contrary, I thought this generation has been great for first person shooters.

Dozens of better shooters came out since FEAR.

By the way, I never understood the fascination with FEAR's weapons. The shotgun and autocannon were boss, but everything else felt like cardboard weapons to me. Especially the assault rifle, I hate that gun.

Yeah but so are the Half-Life games so I don't see your point. I guess you don't like new games? You could just like, not play them. It would save you money on upgrading too I guess.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R SOC patched to 1005v 2009 mod gets my fps vote, Other then the loading times is all around better game modded that is. I don't think there is any mods worth mentioning for Fear, shame really. Vanilla? i Would say Fear also.

FEAR really isn't one of the best, I'd argue. The combat is superb, but that's about it. The levels are a bit too confined, the game never does action horror well at all (especially compared to games like the DeadSpace series), and the way the story is delivered (which is pretty decent) is terrible. That being said it looks visually fantastic, and the feedback is superb when running and gunning. The Shooter genre has been trudging along. We've had some good oldschoolish throwbacks like Bulletstorm, Hard Reset and Serious Sam 3, massively tactical like ArmA 2, strong mainstream shooters like Bioshock, The Darkness and games trying to do more like Deus Ex Human Revolution, Crysis, STALKER and EYE. Course this is all in regard to singleplayer FPS games.

Not sure why people say Hard Reset was a good old-school throwback when it gets the movement and level design so terribly wrong. Maybe it's because you only shoot and collect stuff? That's not old-school. That's braindead. It needs some meat on those bones.

Great games don't die. :) I still have a 1tb drive full of pre 2003 games and emulators that get more play time than anything currently. If you are not into online shooters and MMO's then you quite often find yourself playing the old stuff. I'm finishing Dracula X Rondo of Blood for the TG 16 CD right now and having a heck of alot more fun than anything I have bought this year. My next game I plan on finishing is Super Mario World series on the SNES. That will keep me busy until Metro Last Light, Prey 2, and Stalker Lost Alpha come out.

Exactly! It's the only game I can immediately start back up after beating it. That is truly the mark of a good game. I realize this is subjective, so please don't think I'm saying F.E.A.R. owns all. I know alot of you won't enjoy it as much as I do, but to me personally it's still one of the best FPS out today.

Not really, I thought that game was waaay too easy. The slow mo ability is overpowered beyond imagination. It also makes the combat very repetitive to a certain extent.

Same. It's not a game that all will like, but quite a handful will praise like it's a God-given game. Personally, I thought it was average. The only thing I liked about it was Alma and the scare factor, but that's gotten really old over the years.

Subjectivity is such a fickle thing for us gamers. I actually enjoyed Far Cry 2. :) Once you open yourself up to the experience rather than "play" the game it really becomes quite cerebral. The biggest issue with the respawning checkpoints is easily dealt with by always carrying a explosive bow or grenade launcher within your loadout. In the middle to later parts of the game it becomes much less of an issue due to your unlocking all the safe houses and guard posts. I actually htink FC 2 is much better than Crysis and just very underrated. It also does the best job ever of creating a sandbox world where you feel like you are there.

You're definitely right about the love or hate part. When I do my routine hard drive cleaning, I still hesitate when I'm about to uninstall Far Cry 2. I still have it installed btw and I'm sure I will get around to it one of these days. :P

One of the best FPS games I've ever played, bar none. Closest game to the visceral feeling of the combat in FEAR would be Dead Space 1/2, but the third person perspective makes for a very different experience (and the console controls).

Hm, I have to disagree. I played a lot of Far Cry 2, and I did really enjoy it at times because the gunplay and atmosphere are incredible, but the complaints about the game are just. The lack of friendly AI, the horribly designed sandbox world (with tons of untraversable terrain) and the remaining AI problems (respawning, auto-aim, rubberband jeeps, etc.) made the game more cheap than I could handle at times. Something tells me it would've worked much better as a more linear shooter with sandbox elements, because the final part of the game (which is more or less linear) is absolutely terrific.

Wait, how did we get from FEAR to Far Cry 2?

I derailed my own thread.:D

In regards to your feeling about FC 2. I'd agree on the lack of friendly AI, but everything else just doesn't bother me the way it does you. The enemy AI can be quite good at times. In fact, it's sometimes unfair and really makes you think about how you approach your objectives. You have to use your brain and select the proper weapons along with using the terrain to mask your movements. The respawning checkpoints is a non issue for me as I use the bus system extensively and always keep a grenade launcher on me to take out jeeps and checkpoints. Later on in the game as you scout more guard post the repsawn issue is almost neglible.

fear was good but i def. wouldnt play through it again too much of the game was centered around the creep factor and less about the players involvement. it was also a corridor shooter with mediocre AI. it was good for its day but its a far cry from what todays games offer. which is why fear 2 & 3 suck so much ---

The Ai is some of the best in Fps gaming history period, anyone that says otherwise didn't play the game.

And when i say play the game i mean on hard! We are pc gamers and have the mouse and keybored, the superior controls and have to play the game the way it was meant to be played. On the hardest difficulty, because quiet frankly the mouse is a f****** beast beyond comprehension.

I don't even use slo mo at all. I think it sucks all the challenge out of the game. If I want easy I''ll go play the Wii. :)
