Yeah, noticed this about 3 days ago . Probably happened because the gts250 came out. But in the US the price went from 240$ to 200$ though ( on newegg). 170$ would be awesome though

Will the next leap in video cards still occur at the end of this year? Is the price-drop a response to that?

the next generation GTX 300 with dx11 is expected to come at the end of this year. However, the price cuts are probably in response to the new AMD cards coming out such as the 4870, and the bad economy.

I have been waiting for them to get under $200 for a core 216 to partner with my current one, but the timing is horrible, one of these is coming in on Monday at a local gun shop. AR-15's are in such demand ever since Obama got elected that the wait for them once a licensed dealer has ordered one can be up to a year and since left handed rifles are even harder to come by I think I am just going to have to put my $ towards that instead.

Really? are you in the US? The lowest I see is the Sparkle which is 180$ and then the ASUS which is 193$ then at 200$ both XFX and EVGA -http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048%20106792634%201067940781&name=GeForce%20GTX%20260do you mean after MIR

Well, Nvidia does justify the large price tags on their video cards a bit by making the card more sufficient. (i.e better cooler)

oh yes a better cooler justifies their price  I also notice more ATI cards have 3rd party cooling for the same price as a card with stock cooling and usually does a better job. like you said that could be due to the fact that nvidia stock cooling is so good but still does not justify the price

Only partly justifies it, heh. Yes, my HD 4850 is one of those with 3rd party cooling, but it is not as quiet and cool as Nvidia's. I get lower 40's idle, sure, but at load it climbs up to 75C, and by then, it's as loud as an air conditioner's fan.
