So here is my situation, I have the Radeon x1650 agp running it in XP. However, I cannot get any driver past 6.1 to work. Every time I attempt to install a driver past 6.1 the screen becomes very distorted on boot up, so much in fact that I cannot actually make anything out. I have Windows SP 2 and 2.0 framework, and right now I have no drivers installed and the computer is working fine (but not fine enough). The reason I need to update is because I have just purchased a new monitor (Acer 20" LCD) and the driver 6.1 was causing it to have green specs flash on it (usually in movies or darker areas of picture), I know its not the monitor causing the driver problem for my old monitor also became distorted when I attempted to install drivers higher than 6.1.

Please help, this problem has been bugging me for a while now and I need to fix it.

I've already attempted to clean out my drivers using driver cleaner pro, and I've uninstalled any previous driver of ATI in my system including Catalyst.

Also, there are no small flashing specs on my monitor now that I have the driver uninstalled.

Thank you.

Okay here some install tip.

1)download a new driver pakage with CCC save that on your desktop, up to date is catalyst v8.3?

2)reboot into safe mode start the instaler then under the install you have the opt. to uninstall all previous drivers.

3)again reboot into safe mode, install the driver you downloaded before (the one you used to uninstall your previous with)

4)reboot into your windows and check if that´ll sort it out.

Some suggestions: I'm assuming that you've read the release notes on drivers newer than 6.1 on ATI's website (if not, read the release notes, sometimes there is a work around or it is a known issue, etc.). Go to the manufacturer of your card's website. For example, if you have a Diamond or if it were XFX, or whatever go to the respective website. There's a small chance they may have a fairly recent driver which should be stable with your card.

Lastly, depending on features that may be in the new Radeon drivers and the capabilities of the current BIOS version for your motherboard, you might want to try flashing the BIOS on your motherboard with the latest version. After that completes, try installing the latest drivers. Hope this helps some.

Alright, I'll try that thanks-but what do you mean by "flashing the BIOS"?

Flashing the BIOS is just a phrase meaning updating your BIOS with the latest version. Check out your motherboard manufacturer's website for the latest BIOS release for your board. Usually they will provide instructions for how to flash your bios with the latest version.

Tip: Make sure that your computer does not lose power during the flash process. The flash process takes about a minute, but if your computer loses power during this time frame, your BIOS can be rendered useless.
