ok so i got everything in yesterday and put it together. when i started the machine it was making a very loud high pitched squeal. after trouble shooting...unhooking power to graphics card didn't stop it but taking out the card did stop the noise. i tried inserting the card into all 4 slots and the noise was made in all slots. do i have a bad card?

mobo: MSI 790FX-GD70

What's your power supply? It might be caused by inadequate power to your video card.

No, ATI only recomends a good 600w for even crossfired 5870's.

Did you plug in two 6-pin terminals to the back of the video card?

it made the noise either with or without the pins inserted. Just got off the phone with MSI and Newegg....since I wasn't getting a picture on monitor either, they said it had to be a bad card. So i'm sending it back to newegg for a new one. HOPEFULLY this will solve it.

Is the noise coming from the video card fan?

Is the noise coming from the video card fan?

Many GPU's give a screech to indicate that inadequate power is being supplied to the card. I'm assuming this is the case with the OP.

Have you tried cycling between the display ports? Have you checked that the cable and monitor work? Did you place the GPU on the top-most PCI-E x16 slot?

It wouldn't help in this situation; it's pretty much pointing exclusively to a GPU problem.

There should be a set of two numerical "8" displays set side-by-side on your motherboard. It should read out some digits/letters and stop on a certain code. Could you post what that code is?

--EDIT-- I forgot to add, could you name the specs and MFG of your power supply? (A link would be nice)

my power supply is 550w from Fatal1ty. Both the MSI and the Newegg people I spoke with said it's probably a bad card, but Id hate to waste the time of mailing it back in if it's a simpiler solution. And if its not a bad card im just gonna have the same problem when the new one gets delivered.

Did you plug the monitor into the correct DVI port? If you're looking at the rear of the pc, it should be plugged into the one on the right hand side...

Hey everyone, thanks for all of your help and input. I had a guy take a look at my setup. The video card turned out to be fine. However, the processor wasn't getting enough power. I had a 4 pin connected instead of an 8 pin. But, thankfully he caught that and it works fine now. Can't wait to get it home and fire up Crysis. Thanks again for all of the help.

I wonder how many cards were pronounced DOA in this way, and how many of them were really DOA...
