Does anyone have any advice for stalled launch of total war shogun 2? Dialog box appears for a second then just black screen, have tried everything else suggested on the web, i.e verifying game cache, checking drivers, reinstalling.... thanks

Have you tried this boss?

If you are not able to start Shogun 2: Total War then please delete the preferences.script.txt file you will find at the following location:

- Windows Vista:

C:UsersusernameAppDataRoamingThe Creative AssemblyShogun2scripts

- Windows XP:

C:UsersusernameDocuments and SettingsApplication DataThe Creative AssemblyShogun2scripts

In order to access this folder, please ensure that the option Show hidden files and folders is active:

- Go to the Control Panel and enable clasic View

- Select Folder Options

- Select View

- From Advanced Settings enable locate Hidden files and folders.

- Select 'Show hidden files and folders'

- Click Ok

Don't worry, it's 2.30am right now for me, I should be sleeping. Can you tell us your computer specs?

1. Run the Visual C++ redist setup again. This can be found here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\total war shogun 2\redist\vcredist_x86.exe, or your equivalent directory (varies according to OS). 2. Delete or rename your preferences script. This can be found by typing %appdata% in any navigation bar then hitting enter. Navigate to The Creative Assembly\Shogun2\scripts\ and delete or rename the file preferences.script.txt 3. Verify the integrity of your game cache. Right click on Shogun 2 and click Properties. Then navigate to the local files tab and click "Verify integrity of game cache...". This ensures your version of Shogun 2 is exactly the same working version that appears on the server. 4. Delete your Steam ClientRegistry.blob file. This can be found in your Steam installation folder (for me it's C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam)

Thanks - I've tried 1,3 and 4 several times but no luck, and I just can't find the prefs script, can't even find creativeassembly in the appdata folder. i think its something else because cinematics for warcraft 3 don't work either :/

Could also try running in compatibility mode, other than that, I suggest you head to the total war forums. Hope it all works out for you.

Ok, for anyone who reads this or cares, I got lucky and found a solution when I was trying to fix this: download VLC it must have some codec or something that makes TW: S2 work. After i did that the launch worked and I got a choice to use Direct X 11 or 9, choose 9 and it works. Miracle.
